The ambitious restoration of Balboa Park’s historic Botanical Building is progressing steadily, and the city is on track to complete the project’s first phase in 2024.

Upgrades to the lath structure and its temporary closure began in January 2022. We’re missing the soothing space and its pretty plants — here’s where the project stands as of mid-September 2023.

Three things you should know:

  • Phase 1 includes interior and exterior renovations — so you may have recently seen the structure’s bare bones. The middle portion remains draped.
  • Once Phase 1 is completed, the building will reopen to the public, but exterior restoration may be ongoing. It’ll remain free to visit.
  • Phase 2 will be managed by nonprofit Forever Balboa Park and will enhance the surrounding gardens, restore the fountains and pergola, and improve walkways. These elements are expected to open in 2024, though the timeline is fluid. Donate to the efforts.
