If you’re on the hunt for the perfect appetizer or meal, just wing it. San Diego is home to many great places to get chicken wings, and we’re mildly obsessed with the spicy snack. So, we’re serving up five places that have us clucking over their wings.

Dirty Birds, Various
Whether you want to keep it cool with “no heat” or a get a fiery wing, this restaurant has dozens of sauces to try. Locals aren’t the only ones drooling over Dirty Birds, The Daily Meal once ranked it the No. 10 wing spot in America.

San Diego Brewing Company, Grantville
Head to this brewpub for a saucy selection of wings. You’ll be able to pick your heat level and flavor, and you can opt for bone-in, boneless, or the highly-rated vegetarian wings.

Don’t let the name confuse you, the wings are a stand-out on this menu. Specifically, the Spicy Garlic Wings have been noted for being crispy, spicy, and a little sweet — and famous foodie Guy Fieri once tried them.

Pizza e Birra, Middletown
According to Yelp data, this is the No. 1 spot for wings in San Diego. Diners have raved that the sauce selection and crunchiness pairs perfectly with the restaurant’s pizzas.

Epic Wings, Various
This chain was founded as Wings N’ Things in San Diego in 1982 and claims it helped buffalo wings migrate to the West Coast from the east. The company has expanded to other states, but there are 17 restaurants in San Diego County and decades of local history.

Weather
  • The California Independent System may issue a Flex Alert this week — notices to reduce energy consumption during high-usage periods. High heat is expected throughout California, though San Diego County may bypass the most extreme temperatures. (NBC 7)
Development
  • Oceanside celebrated the completion of the steel structure that will form Frontwave Arena — a multipurpose facility that will be the future home of the San Diego Sockers. Crews hope to enclose the metal frame by October before rainier weather, and the project is expected to be completed in 2024. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Holiday
  • Chula Vista is already spreading holiday cheer. The city announced its Starlight Parade will return on Sunday, Dec. 3, after a 3-year hiatus. The event promises to be bigger and brighter than before, and registration is now open for participants.
Traffic
  • Students in Carlsbad and Encinitas are getting ready to pedal back to school. Both districts are requiring a mandatory bike safety course for students who want to ride bikes or e-bikes to class. The sessions cover traffic rules and safety protocols to address the rise in bike-related accidents. (ABC 10)

  • Longtime Poway umpire Dave Miller will be taking his skills to the biggest game in the Little League. The local has been selected as one of 16 people to umpire the Little League World Series, which starts today. You can catch him calling the shots on ESPN and ESPN+. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

  • Prepare for an electric New Year at Petco Park. FNGRS CRSSD announced the lineup for its PROPER NYE/NYD event on Sunday, Dec. 31 + Monday, Jan. 1, 2024. The multi-stage show will feature electronic music acts like Diplo, and ticket sales begin this Friday, Aug. 18, at noon.

  • San Diego has been named the top location for a “babymoon” — a couple’s final vacation together before the birth of a child. The SIXT study gives the city high marks for its friendly locals, scenic views, food and drink offerings, and safety score. (SIXT)

In the wake of the devastating fires in Maui, local organizations and businesses are coming together to help victims. Here are some of the ways you can support relief efforts.
  • Rawmana Fitness is hosting the San Diego Benefit Concert for Lahaina on Sunday, Aug. 20, 1-5 p.m. There will be music, food, and merch vendors; monetary donations are greatly appreciated.
  • Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern will donate a portion of every Mai Tai sold to Maui relief organizations.
  • Cohn Restaurant Group has two restaurants in Maui and is helping to feed people impacted by the fires. It’s accepting donations.
  • The San Diego Humane Society’s emergency team is in Maui. The organization is asking for donations to help fund the nonprofit and its relief assistance.
  • Locally-based MMA fighter Ilima-Lei Macfarlane’s supply drives were very successful, but materials can no longer be accepted. Monetary donations are still needed.
