We know SD has a vibrant arts scene, but some of the best artwork doesn’t live in a local museum. The city is home to hundreds of murals, so if you’re looking to explore stellar street art, these pieces featured in our San Diego mural guide will help you start your tour.
🎨 Hillcrest Mural | 3737 Fifth Ave. | By Austin Gosswiller and Jack Stricker
To celebrate 40 years in business, California Bank and Trust gave Hillcrest “the gift of art.” This mural features landmarks and images that reflect the beauty found in communities near the bank.
🎨 Home | Liberty Station, between Barracks 14 + 15 | By Scarlett Baily
This 2,535-sqft mural celebrates the city we call home with a collage of locally inspired images, including people, marine life, and flowers.
The MLK Jr. + Mount Hope Community Mural Project on SR-94.
🎨 MLK Jr./Mount Hope Community Mural Project | Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway eastbound | Created by Neil Shigley and Philip Matzigkeit
In 2012, this 225-ft long, 20-ft tall mural was added to a stretch of state Route 94 that was dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1989. It was San Diego’s first large-scale memorial honoring the civil rights leader, and it was designed by two SDSU professors using a grant from Caltrans.
🎨 Angry Pandas | 2930 University Ave. | By Aaron Martin and Thao Huynh French
We might not have pandas at the San Diego Zoo anymore, but this North Park mural on the side of Shank & Bône features two angry pandas. The roaring animals represent the ability to persevere through struggles, and the lotus flowers behind them are a nod to the artists’ Vietnamese roots.
Drag yourself to Manhattan Bar in Chula Vista to see this mural.
Did you know drag superstar RuPaul was born in San Diego? He later moved to Atlanta, then NYC, where he once declared himself the “Queen of Manhattan.” So, it’s fitting that a mural celebrating his life is on the side of Manhattan Bar in the South Bay.

The end of 2023 was bananas at the San Diego Zoo — four monkey infants were born within a few weeks. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said these new residents will help grow the population of three species:
A Schmidt’s red-tailed monkey, born Nov. 11 — this little one lives in the Ituri Forest habitat.
A DeBrazza’s monkey, born Oct. 28, the first DeBrazza’s born at the zoo in 26 years — lives in the Lost Forest habitat.
All four infants are bonding with their mothers, who are frequently nursing them and helping them adjust to their new surroundings. Guests may be able to spot them at their respective habitats, and they’re expected to become more active as they develop.
Kitsch’s rice bar shampoo and conditioner. Reviewers noticed touchably soft hair and even improvements in hair loss, plus the bar is plastic-free thanks to its intelligently concentrated design.
Good morning, San Diego. Today we’re observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and I highly recommend checking out the Martin Luther King, Jr. Promenade next time you’re in the Gaslamp Quarter. It’s a 0.6-mile linear park along the Santa Fe Rail and it can be a quite peaceful walk. It’s lined with quotes and artwork that honor MLK’s legacy and encourage reflection.
