According to the National Weather service, the 2022-2023 water year has accumulated 45 rainy days from Oct. 1 to March 21, ranking it at No. 11 — the 1951-1952 water year set the record with 53 days. Sports
San Diego Wave FC opened the season with a victory and record-breaking support. The team defeated Chicago Red Stars 3-2 at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday in front of 30,854 fans. That crowd broke the NSWL record for largest attendance at a home opener.
Opening
A sweet — but not too sweet — addition is coming to Kearny Mesa. Yiko Yiko is aiming to open on Friday, March 31, and will specialize in healthier versions of Chinese desserts. We’ve got our eye on the fluffy green tea chiffon cake that uses egg whites rather than baking powder. (Eater San Diego)
Jobs
San Diego County’s unemployment rate rose to 3.7% in January, up from 3% in December, with retail and tech industries accounting for ~9,500 jobs lost. Still, the numbers work out to be better than California’s 4.6% unemployment rate — the same rate the county saw in January 2022. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Outdoors
Republic Services has selectedUrban Corps of San Diego County to receive $250,000 as part of its National Neighborhood Promise program. The funding will support the revitalization of Otay Valley Regional Park, including trail restoration, cleanup efforts, and sustainability education.
Real Estate
Since the housing market peaked in July 2022, the US has lost 58 “million-dollar communities” — neighborhoods where the average home is worth $1+ million. According to Zillow, Bonita is one of them, where the average home price is now $993,500. Seven remain in San Diego County. (Times of San Diego)
Seasonal
Has spring sprung in your home yet? If you’re looking to get outdoors, these wipeable tablecloths are just begging for some alfresco dining, and these garden and herb labels will get you in a planting mood. Plus, this viral birdfeeder practically brings the birds inside with you.
Finance
Experts at The Ascent have sorted through hundreds of credit cards so far this year. And their top five bonus cardsare (cue drumroll)... these five. 👀*
This weekend was a slam dunk for the San Diego State University Aztecs. On Friday, the team defeated the No. 1 seeded Alabama Crimson Tide 71-64 in the NCAA Tournament.
This allowed the team to advance to the Elite Eight in the March Madness bracket. Yesterday, they faced the Creighton Bluejays in a nail-biter game. With 1.2 seconds left on the clock and a tied score, Darrion Trammell shot a game-winning free throw, giving the Aztecs a 57-56 victory.
This is Aztecs history, marking the program’s first-ever appearance in the Elite Eight — they’d only been in the Sweet 16 twice before. Now, history continues as the team will get their first shot in the Final Four.
Next stop: NRG Stadium in Houston, TX, to face the Florida Atlantic Owls on Saturday, April 1, 3:09 p.m., in the Final Four.
Good morning, San Diego. Mondays always put me in the mood for coffee, and I love Lofty Coffee. There are locations in Encinitas, Solana Beach, Little Italy, La Costa, and Carlsbad Village, but I’d recommend taking a trip to Roasting Works in Encinitas (across the street from the cafe). The food and drinks are great, and there are cool hilltop views overlooking North Coast Highway 101.
