News Notes

Outdoors

After an 18-month closure and $2.06 million in major repairs, the city fully reopened Crystal Pier in PB this week. Crews had been working since January 2024 to replace dozens of piles and braces destroyed by storms and surf on the westernmost part of the 98-year-old landmark.

Active

Let the games begin. The 72nd annual Over-the-Line Tournament returns to Fiesta Island this weekend and next. The ball + bat sport invented in South Mission Beach in the 1950s is synonymous with summertime in San Diego — read all about it, play with your crew, or cheer from the sandlines.

Zoo

How cool is this? San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has added plants to its Frozen Zoo, which is the largest and most diverse collection of cryopreserved wildlife material in the world. Samples from 18 endangered Nuttall’s scrub oak trees were preserved, which could allow scientists to reintroduce the plants in the future.

Open

An upscale California comfort food restaurant dubbed Lana is now open on South Highway 101 in Solana Beach. The spot will debut its brunch menu this weekend, which includes wood-fired morning harvest flatbread and tres leches brioche French toast. Make reservations and enjoy.

Edu

When San Diego Unified School District students start school on Monday, Aug. 11, they’ll have to turn off their phones and put them away. The district adopted the “Phone-Free School Day Policy,” banning phone use during the school day with exceptions like lunchtime for high schoolers and during emergencies. (CBS8)

Sports

Let’s go, SD. Manny Machado, Fernando Tatís Jr., and Jason Adam will play in the MLB’s 2025 All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 15. Machado is also coming off his milestone 2,000th hit. Go beyond the scoreboard and behind the scenes of the San Diego Padres with Locked On’s daily, team-focused podcasts.

Coming Soon

A seafood-centric restaurant named Dora is slated to open this fall in the La Jolla Theater District. The spot hails from Chef Accursio Lota of North Park’s Trattoria Cori Pastificio and will feature pasta, gelato, and prix fixe pre-theater menus themed to match shows at the nearby La Jolla Playhouse. (Eater San Diego)

Concert

Arts District Liberty Station will launch its free Summer Arts Fest this weekend on the North Promenade, a family-friendly showcase of live music. The shows will rock the park on second Saturdays this season — July 12, Aug. 9, and Sept. 13, 4-7 p.m. Bring your picnic blankets and chairs.

Number

~700. That’s how many items were turned into the lost and found during this season’s San Diego County Fair. Items include 89 credit cards, 62 sets of keys, 22 water bottles, and one bike pump. To claim your things, call Fair Guest Services at (858) 794-1124 and leave a message.

Festival

Imaginarium’s outdoor light festival “Utopia” will debut tomorrow at Las Americas Premium Outlets. The walk-through attraction includes glowing installations, activity rooms, and John’s Adrenaline Circus featuring extreme sports stunts. Utopia will be open Sunday-Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 12. Tickets start at $21.

State

California love. According to new Crunchbase data, startup investors love the Golden State. In the first half of 2025, about 68% of all US startup funding went to companies headquartered in California — a historically high statistic. Many recipients of big investments this year work in the AI space.

Ranked

Speaking of startups, San Diego landed at No. 19 on this list of the best startup ecosystems in the world. The study compared 5 million companies across 350+ startup ecosystems and used metrics like early-stage funding, value growth, and the average software engineer salary to determine the rankings.
