🎁 To San Diego, with love

It’s a beaut, San Diego, it’s a beaut. This holiday season we’re unwrapping a few presents you won’t find under a tree or in a store. From artworks to monetary donations and historical artifacts, check out these gifts given and notable gift givers through the years.

Kate Sessions | The horticulturist made her impact throughout San Diego, helping bring thousands of trees and plants to the city. You can find her handiwork all over, including: Balboa Park, Mission Hills Nursery, and Kate Sessions Park.

Dr. Seuss | Theodore Seuss Geisel lived in La Jolla for more than 40 years, and oh, the places you’ll go when you see the beloved author’s footprint in and around SD. A giant collection of his work is displayed in the Geisel Library at UCSD. If you’d like to have some of his famous artwork hanging in your home, there are pieces for sale at the Legends Gallery in La Jolla.

Yokohama Friendship Bell | To help establish a relationship with San Diego, the residents of Yokohama, Japan gifted the large bronze bell in May 1958. This marked the beginning of an official bond of the two as sister cities. Yokohama is one of more than a dozen of San Diego’s sister cities.

These extraordinary gifts not only add character and value to our city but also show how generosity can have a lasting impact.

Did you know? SDtoday is part of a team of 28 newsletters across the country. And we want you to get to know all the cities we call home... but we didn’t go easy on you.

Put your knowledge of US trivia to the test with a dang-near-impossible quiz.

Better yet, round up the whole family. Send this to the librarians, the educators, the APUSH student, your ultra-competitive cousin... whoever.

See if you can get a perfect score. We kind of doubt it.

Hey there readers! I’m Josh, one of the managers here at 6AM City. Don’t forget to do something nice for yourself this week. Could be a quick stretch, could be your favorite beverage (mine is an iced coffee, no matter the temperature). We’re our best selves when we treat ourselves best, after all.
