It’s baaack. After an extensive, three-year restoration project, Balboa Park’s Botanical Building has reopened, once again firmly planting itself as one of the landmark’s icons.
The Botanical Building was designed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition as one of the park’s permanent features. It’s also one of the largest remaining structures in the world made of lath, which are those thin strips of wood on the roof’s exterior arches and center rotunda.
The $26.45 million restoration project wanted to bring the building back to its glory days and included structural improvements, redwood lath replacement, window arcade reconstruction, planter upgrades, and accessibility upgrades.
Over the course of construction, the building was fenced off and sometimes draped. Today, visitors can step inside daily, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and enjoy its tranquility and 2,100+ plants. As always, entry is free.
Local nonprofit Forever Balboa Park is leading the project’s second phase, which includes enhancing the surrounding gardens and restoring the historic pergola. Here’s how to help.

Now arriving — or departing — at San Diego International Airport. | Photo via Monica Garske + SDtoday
The busy holiday travel season is upon us, and we’ve got a little gift for you. If you’re flying via San Diego International Airport — aka SAN — we’ve created a guide that covers everything from New T1 updates and parking, to food options and nonstop flights. Smooth travels, friends.
What to know
TSA’s peak screening hours are typically between 5-7 a.m., 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and 7-9 p.m.; check TSA wait times via the agency’s app. SAN’s website also offers helpful info on security + regulations. Departures only occur between 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m., so the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority tells SDtoday that mornings are peak hours at SAN. The busiest days to travel are Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays.
Nonstop flights
SAN offers 80+ nonstop flights — 74 domestic that go to various US regions, plus 10 international flights. Here are a few nonstop flights you might want to hop on:
Touch screen compatible gloves. Beat winter dryness + rough skin by keeping hands protected when you’re out and about, thanks to gloves that still let you use your phone.
Hi, San Diego. I recently got together with my friend and co-worker Michael (you remember Michael — he says hi) to chat through some projects and, of course, drink good, local coffee. We tried seasonal drinks from Kaffee Meister in Santee — gingerbread and peppermint lattes — and in about two sips, we were in the holiday spirit. Ah, the power of the season.
