Mount Laguna — at 6,000 ft in elevation — experienced its first snowfall of the season yesterday. With a temp of 34°, Laguna Mountain Lodge’s weather camera showed a blanket of the white stuff covering the lodge’s roof and part of Sunrise Highway in San Diego County’s mountains. Civic
More affordable housing is coming. The county has set aside $42 million for nine developments that will provide ~872 local homes. The projects include the 45-unit Navajo Family Apartments on Navajo Road, the 95-unit Terrasini on Mt. Etna Drive, and the 150-unit Spring Valley Trolley Station complex on Spring Street.
Development
A wave of progress is rolling through SAN’s ongoing New T1. Crews are currently installing curved glass panels on the new terminal’s facade for the 32-ft high, 900-ft long “Luminous Wave” wall in the ticketing area. The wall will help control heat, sunlight, and glare inside the building.
Open
Juice It Up! – a chain known for its smoothies and superfruit bowls — has debuted its first of six planned locations in San Diego County. The business is open daily at 751 Center Dr., Ste. 109, in Nordahl Marketplace in San Marcos. A second store will open this year in Little Italy.
Coming Soon
SoCal’s beloved Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee will open its second San Diego location this spring at 2100 Kettner Blvd. in Little Italy. The 1,100-sqft shop will offer its famous cake-style donuts in core flavors and seasonal options, and feature a coffee and tea menu. (Eater San Diego)
Closing
A beloved vintage shop in Little Italy will soon be history. Architectural Salvage — selling vintage and reclaimed interior design items for the past 28 years at 2401 Kettner Blvd. — will close this month. A “Celebration Sale” is planned for Friday, Jan. 12-Sunday, Jan. 14.

The 29th annual ShamROCK Music + Beer Festival will turn the Gaslamp Quarter emerald green on Saturday, March 16, 2-11 p.m. The musical lineup for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration is set to be announced this month; tickets are available now.

According to Yelp, Starry Lane Bakery in Hillcrest ranks No. 6 among the top 20 gluten free bakeries in the US. With a 4.5-star rating, Yelpers praised the business for being a dedicated, allergen-free bakery offering items like bread, cupcakes, muffins, cookies, and pastry bars. (Yelp)

Luna, Bella, Daisy, Max, Milo, and Zeus — those were the most popular names for the San Diego Humane Society’s (SDHS) shelter animals in 2023. SDHS currently has 430+ pets available for adoption, including a special dog named Daisy who has been at a local shelter for more than 400 days.
Kids
Legoland California Resort is celebrating its 25th birthday by offering $25 kid tickets for a limited time. Up to four kid passes can be purchased when you buy a single adult ticket, valid for one-day admission to the amusement park Monday, Jan. 8-Sunday, March 10.
Eat
North Park’s Pâtiserrie Melanie — a cute French bistro led by Le Cordon Bleu-trained Chef Melanie Dunn — is now offering dinner service. The new evening menu is served Wednesday-Sunday starting at 5 p.m. and features classic dishes like Coq au Vin and Boeuf Bourguignon, plus desserts like Tarte Citron.

Nova set to release Azteks Kombucha in support of SDSU student athletes

You know what they say — teamwork makes the dream work.
MESA Foundation — an organization that connects San Diego State University student athletes with local nonprofits — has partnered with Novo Brazil Brewing and Nova Easy Kombucha for a collaboration where everybody wins.
In late November 2023, SDSU Aztecs Men’s Basketball star Lamont Butler led a group of players to Novo’s Chula Vista headquarters where they collaborated with brewers to create a new raspberry lemonade hard kombucha flavor.
This Friday, Jan. 5, that play will come full circle as Novo and Nova release Azteks Kombucha.
The flavor will be available on draft and in canned packs at various Novo and Nova taproom locations — including Chula Vista and Ocean Beach — with a percentage of sales donated to the MESA Foundation. The cans will be sold at retail locations throughout SD soon, too.

Hi, friends. Last week, Spill the Beans debuted its newest coffee shop — a breezy, cute location at 525 Camino de la Reina in Mission Valley. We dropped by for a coffee (the Basic Sitch never fails us) and loved the roomy patio.
It’s next door to Gravity Heights’ new brewpub that’s still under construction and with coffee and craft brews eventually side-by-side, we’re thinking we might as well just move in now, right?
