The glow of holiday lights makes this time of year feel especially magical. In San Diego County, many neighborhoods and attractions truly dazzle with elaborate light displays, typically up through Christmas Day. Here are a dozen of the brightest standouts.

Starlight Circle | East + West Glendon circles, Santee | Free | Find dozens of homes decked out in lights and themes. Sometimes, residents set up stands selling hot cocoa, cookies, or kettle corn. You can walk through the neighborhood or drive slowly.

Candy Cane Lane | Hickory Street, Poway | Free | Drive through the neighborhood slowly or park along Carriage Road or Saddlewood Drive and walk around.

Christmas Circle | Whitney + Mankato streets, south of H Street, Chula Vista | Free | This South Bay neighborhood has been decking itself out in holiday lights for the past six decades.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance preps for 2024 Rose Parade

SD Zoo 2024 Rose Parade Float Rendering
This is how San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance envisions floating into 2024. | Rendering via San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance
San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) will march into the 2024 Rose Parade with a float that has a story to tell. SDZWA shared a rendering of its 55-ft, animated display with an “It Began With a Roar” theme. It showcases animals who inspired conservation efforts and helped make the zoo world-famous.

The float’s familiar furry faces include:
  • A lion, modeled after Rex, who was on display during the Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park. His roar is said to have inspired the San Diego Zoo’s creation.
  • A polar bear, modeled after Chinook from the zoo’s Polar Plunge habitat, used for conservation research as the species faces threats from climate change.
  • An orangutan, modeled after Karen, a Sumatran orangutan born with a heart defect and nursed to health by zoo staff.
The Rose Parade takes place Jan. 1, 2024, at 8 a.m. in Pasadena; it’ll also be broadcast on TV.
The Buy

Anything off of this year’s Oprah’s Favorite Things list. We’re seeing: luxury flaky sea salt, all-weather boots, fleece robes, and a baked brie board.

Can confirm: The holiday pop-up bars around San Diego this season are poppin’. I recently visited the Over the Top Holiday Lounge at the Top of the Hyatt, a cute spot on the 40th floor of the Grand Hyatt that runs through Wednesday, Dec. 27.

The menu features festive cocktails like the BYO Cozy Cabin Cocoa and Après Ski Margarita, and the cabin-inspired décor is giving. Pro tip: Visit Tuesdays and Fridays to enjoy live holiday entertainment, 7-9 p.m.
