San Diego expecting storm conditions from Hurricane Hilary

We hope you have an umbrella handy. The National Weather Service reported that the tropical storm that formed off Mexico’s coast has been upgraded to Hurricane Hilary — but San Diegan’s aren’t expected to feel the impact until later this weekend.
Hilary started to form on Wednesday and was classified as a Category 4 hurricane yesterday night. It’s expected to approach the Baja California peninsula tomorrow with decreased severity. As it moves north, it should continue to weaken. By the time it reaches San Diego, it could possibly still be classified as a tropical storm.
A projected map of Hurricane Hilary as of Thursday, Aug. 17.
For San Diego County, Hilary is expected to bring wind and showers starting tomorrow evening, with the heaviest rain Sunday into Monday.
As of yesterday, the National Weather Service anticipates the heaviest rain will be east of San Diego County — areas like Borrego Springs, Julian, and Mount Laguna could see up to 7 inches.
Coastal communities will see less rain, with downtown San Diego expected to receive 1.5 inches.
Wind speeds are expected to increase Sunday and peak that evening into Monday morning — maximum gusts could exceed 50 mph early Monday. High surf is also expected along the coast both days.
Current predictions are based on the National Hurricane Center’s forecast cone. This represents the probable track of the storm’s center, but it allows for greater variance for events further in the future. Predictions may change before the storm reaches San Diego, so know where to find alerts.
Did you know? The last time a tropical storm reached land in San Diego was in 1939, and the only known hurricane to hit the county was in 1858.

Poway’s homeless encampment ban is now in effect. The policy will allow police officers to issue citations and remove tents in public spaces if a person refuses an available shelter bed. The city says it will prioritize offering resources over policy enforcement. (ABC 10)

Locals have reported an increase in tarantula sightings across San Diego County, especially in suburban, inland communities. If you see one, it’s most likely a California Black Tarantula or San Diego Bronze Tarantula looking for a mate — so it won’t bother you if you leave it alone. (CBS 8)

San Diego Wave FC has signed San Diego native Kyra Carusa for the rest of the 2023 season. Locally, she’s played for Del Norte High School and for the San Diego Surf soccer club. Most recently, the striker competed as part of Ireland’s World Cup team. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

We know San Diegans love going places with their dogs, so we always have a seat for our four-legged friends at the table. According to Yelp’s list of the top 100 dog-friendly places to eat in the US, three local spots make perfect locations for a doggy date.
Viewpoint Brewing in Del Mar landed at No. 11 for its ample outdoor seating, views of the San Dieguito River, and proximity to walking trails.
Kairoa Brewing Company in University Heights was ranked No. 20 for its love of pups and pints. It’s known to host adoption events and even features a dog of the week on its Instagram.
Queenstown Public House in Little Italy came in at No. 49 and is noted for its cozy atmosphere with plenty of outdoor space.
Happy Friday, San Diego. I hope I’m not the only one who’s itching to sip on a pumpkin spice latte or dig into some pumpkin bread. Dunkin has already released its pumpkin menu, but I’m waiting for other local shops to bring back their offerings (hopefully unseasonably early). I’m dreaming of Better Buzz’s Pumpkin Cold Foam and Lofty Coffee Co.'s Pumpkin Pie Cloudy.
