Let’s play bug bingo

What’s your favorite bug? | Graphic by SDtoday and 6AM City
Grown-ups, do you have a kid who loves creepy-crawlies? Give them this field guide to local bug finding.

Have you ever gone looking for bugs? To be an expert bug hunter, you need:
  • A magnifying glass
  • A phone to take pictures with
  • A notepad to write down your discoveries
Now that you have everything, you’re ready to play bug bingo. Here are a few of our favorite local bugs:

Caterpillar
These aren’t really a kind of bug, but an age of bug. Caterpillars are the larvae — a fancy word for “young” — of moths and butterflies. Their name means “hairy cat,” but not all of them are hairy.

Where to find it: Since this is a life stage of a bug, you’re more likely to see caterpillars in the spring (think: May or June). Some places where you can see butterflies include Zoro Garden in Balboa Park, the Butterfly Garden at San Dieguito County Park, or the Ocean Hills butterfly sanctuary.

Dragonfly (or damselfly)
Did you know that there are over 3,000 different types of dragonflies? They are great hunters and — unlike some other bugs — can fly in every direction.

Where to find it: Wet places like ponds, lakes, and marshes (like the water at Balboa Park). They also like really colorful flowers.

Ladybug
You know this one — those red beetles with black spots. But did you know that they’re good for gardens? They eat other bugs that might hurt the plants. So next time you see a ladybug, say “Thank you for keeping my garden safe.”

Where to find it: Near plants, especially leafy plants like clover.

Tap the button below for gross facts and hints of where the bugs might be. Be sure to send us pictures of any discoveries you’ve made.

🎀 Come on Barbie, let’s go boating

It’s giving Barbie vibes: Rent this pink party boat to cruise San Diego Bay

Hi, Barbie — you wanna go for a ride? | Photo via GetMyBoat
With Barbiecore at its peak this summer, one boat rental company is parlaying the power of pink into San Diego Bay, offering all-pink boat rentals “to live out your Barbie dreams on the water.”

GetMyBoat (think Airbnb, but for boat rentals) is currently booking its Pink Party Boat Cruise, a captain-led charter experience for up to six passengers for 2-12 hours, starting at $180 per hour.

The electric Duffy boat is bright pink with a matching awning and features a Bluetooth stereo system to play your favorite music — we’re thinking this little ditty or the trendy soundtrack from the “Barbie” movie.

Knowing Barbie and her preferred modes of transportation, we feel like she’d love this for you — it screams San Diego summer vibes.

From the editor
OK, we’re obsessed with the capybaras at the San Diego Zoo — and it looks like everyone on social media is too. Four capy babies were born at the zoo on July 23, and they’ve got quite the fan base already.

The zoo has been posting updates from their habitat (you can see them at Elephant Odyssey) and some of our favorite comments include: “Oh, to be at the center of a capy cuddle” and “Congrats on the baby potatoes, I mean, capybaras.”
