What to know: District 4 special primary election in San Diego County

The special primary election to fill the vacant seat in San Diego County’s Fourth Supervisorial District is on Tuesday, Aug. 15. Here’s what you need to know about the process.
Communities and candidates:
District 4 serves ~700,000 residents across 101 square miles including communities like North Park, Balboa Park, Mission Hills, Normal Heights, University Heights, Clairemont, Lemon Grove, La Mesa, and more. Find out if you’re in District 4.
The candidates looking to fill the role left vacant by Nathan Fletcher’s resignation are Democrats Monica Montgomery Steppe and Janessa Goldbeck, and Republicans Amy Reichert and Paul McQuigg.
Vote in person at a Vote Center — seven early voting locations will be open daily, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., starting Saturday, Aug. 5. A total of 14 Vote Centers will be open on Election Day, 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
Vote Center locations include the North Park Recreation Center, City Heights Recreation Center, Father Junípero Serra Hall, and Encanto VFW Post #512.

What’s next?
The San Diego County Registrar of Voters will track election results and has until Thursday, Sept. 14, to certify the election.
If no candidate receives a majority vote, then a runoff election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The elected candidate will serve for the remainder of the current term, through January 2027.

Hasan Ikhrata — the controversial executive director of SANDAG — has submitted his resignation to the board stating his final day will be Friday, Dec. 29. Enforcement of the City of San Diego’s Unsafe Camping Ordinance began this week, banning tent encampments in public areas like city sidewalks if a nearby shelter bed is available. The ban impacts zones within a two-block radius of schools, transit stations, and parks regardless of shelter capacity, too. (NBC 7)

The Department of Parks and Recreation will temporarily close Mt. Gower and El Capitan and Hellhole Canyon preserves today through Thursday, Aug. 31, due to expected high temperatures. ArtWalk Liberty Station 2023 returns with 175+ artists

Liberty Station’s ARTS District will be especially colorful as the 18th annual ArtWalk returns to Ingram Plaza (2751 Dewey Rd.) this Saturday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The free fine arts festival features 175+ artists from the US and Mexico showcasing and selling their works, plus live entertainment, food vendors, and interactive art activities.
New this year is the VIP Preview pARTy on Friday, Aug. 4, 4-8 p.m., where guests can meet the artists and peek at pieces ahead of the fest. A $25 ticket includes two drink vouchers and live music.
As always, ArtWalk supports ArtReach San Diego, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing equity in visual arts education in local K-8 schools.
