What would Drink Up Month be without a little (or a lot of) coffee? SD ranks among the top US coffee cities thanks to factors like cafes per capita and the price of beans and it has no shortage of masterful baristas, aromatic roasts, and foamy lattes.

If you’re having trouble deciding on a coffee spot, we’ve got some brews clues and a guide with 26 top-notch coffee shops in San Diego.

Roasts to boast

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, Various | This chain started in its namesake Bird Rock neighborhood in 2006 and offers an impressive lineup of single origin beans and locally-inspired blends.

Better Buzz Coffee Roasters, Various | Established as a Pacific Beach coffee cart in 2002, this local brand now has over a dozen locations and a roasting facility in San Diego County.

Dark Horse Coffee Roasters, Various | Since 2013, this brand has been roasting and brewing its coffee locally and now has six stores in San Diego County.

HOB Coffee, Various | If you like to add more coffee to your coffee, HOB — aka House of Black Coffee — is the spot for you.

Where to write your novel

The Living Room Coffeehouse, Various | Grab a seat at this cozy shop that has a variety of coffees, espresso drinks, and Freezes (blended iced drinks).

Lestat’s, Various | Relax at this shop that’s been a part of San Diego since 1997. It now has three local cafes with seating, WiFi, art, sandwiches, and of course coffee.

Seeing is believing

S3 Coffee Bar, Grantville | This coffee shop will have you feeling like you stepped into a coloring book with its fun designs. Once you get a drink, you’ll understand the buzz.

Pink Rose Cafe, La Mesa | Owner Nadia Zamora based this cafe on her love of roses and all things pink. We recommend you think pink and order the signature Pink Rose Latte.

Don’t be surprised if you see a small, yellow, 4-wheeled vehicle rolling down a bike lane. That’s Gio, the City of San Diego’s electric buggy that is being used to assess the quality of Class I bike paths.

Gio runs on a 64-volt electric battery and is equipped with a camera on its roof that records the quality of bike paths. This footage is used to monitor asphalt and prioritize repairs.

The buggy is working to evaluate 70+ miles of cycling paths, and can be seen in areas of the county like Balboa Park, Mission Beach, Seaport Village, Lake Miramar, and San Ysidro. The vehicle is just one component of San Diego’s efforts to continuously monitor its streets, sidewalks, and bike infrastructure.

From the editor
Good morning, San Diego. As an avid coffee drinker, I try not to pair every cup with something sweet. When I do, I like to have a cinnamon roll with my morning caffeine. I recommend getting your buns to Bear Buns Bakery in Serra Mesa, Blackmarket Bakery (multiple locations), or Charlie’s Best Bread in Pacific Beach for some cinnamon sweetness.
