June is Pride Month in the US and California, but San Diego’s celebration of the LGBTQ+ community goes down in July. This year’s schedule is packed with a variety of events, because there’s no one way to show pride.

Black Pride 2023

The San Diego Black LGBTQ Coalition is hosting Black Pride with a “Black Joy Renaissance” and “Body Positivity” theme. The event is Thursday, July 6-Sunday, July 9, and features a kickoff mixer, the Meet Me at the Back Mini Ball Volume 4 extravaganza, a day party at Rich’s nightclub in Hillcrest, and a pool party.

Spirit of Stonewall Rally

San Diego has hosted this rally since 1975 to honor leaders who are fighting to preserve progress and address challenges in the LGBTQ+ community. The free ceremony is on Friday, July 14, 6 p.m., at the Hillcrest Pride Flag.

San Diego Pride Parade

The 1.5-mile parade returns on Saturday, July 15, starting at 10 a.m. The procession begins at the Hillcrest Pride Flag, marches down University Avenue, turns onto Sixth Avenue, and ends in Balboa Park by Quince Street. This is free to watch, so secure your viewing spot early.

News Notes
Civic
  • Encinitas City Council declared a state of emergency for bike, e-bike, and motor bike safety — set to expire Saturday, Sept. 30 — following the death of a teenage boy in a collision. City leaders hope the declaration will bring more awareness to the issue and its educational resources. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Community
  • The Ocean Beach Pier reopened to the public over the weekend, just in time for its 57th anniversary on Sunday, July 2. The landmark has been deemed safe following minor repairs, but city officials are still working toward a long-term solution to replace or rehabilitate the pier.
Holiday
  • Make space in your Fourth of July plans for travel delays. According to AAA, this year’s holiday is expected to see 4.4% more people on the go than last year — including 3.4 million people in SoCal — from Friday, June 30-Tuesday, July 4. (NBC 7)
Development
  • Construction on three new affordable housing complexes has begun in Clairemont on excess county land that was once the site of a county crime lab. The buildings will add 300+ units, expected to be completed in 2026; a fourth building will be added later, bringing ~100 more homes.
Sports
  • SDSU did not provide notice of intent to exit the Mountain West Conference by Friday, June 30 — a required step to join a new conference in the 2024-2025 school year. While this does not guarantee the university will not depart, the required exit fee has doubled to $34 million. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Outdoors

Arts
  • What can we learn from the worst case scenario? The Fleet Science Center hopes to answer that with its new “Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Experience” summer exhibit, running through Sunday, Sept. 24. The display is inspired by the similarly-named survival handbook and challenges guest to safely overcome obstacles.

  • UC San Diego has gotten high marks on Money’s “The Best Colleges in America 2023” list. The study assessed 700+ US universities on metrics measuring quality and affordability, and UC San Diego is one of 13 public universities to earn the top score. (UC San Diego Today)

⚡️ Wake me up, before you ‘gO’side’

The ‘gO’side’ shuttle returns for its second summer

For the second summer, it’s going to be wheelie easy to get around Oceanside. The city’s gO’side electric shuttle is back, and starting today, it will be operating seven days a week.

During last year’s pilot program, the 5-passenger shuttles drove an average of 7,200 monthly passengers and saved an estimated 1,600 gallons of gas. The service can be used to get around parts of the city — mostly areas west of Interstate 5, but check the map before booking a trip.

You can request a ride using the Circuit app or by calling (760) 547-7870 — rides are $3 per rider with a $6 cap for groups larger than two. Ready to ride? Through November, the hours of operation are:
  • Monday-Wednesday: 12-10 p.m.
  • Thursday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

From the editor
Happy Monday, San Diego. Recently, I went to Dunkin’ in downtown San Diego and I had the Padres Donut. It’s just a chocolate frosted donut with gold sprinkles to celebrate the Friars. Did it taste special? No, but it made me feel special because it merged my Massachusetts roots with my love for San Diego.
