Clink, clink. We’d like to make a toast.

In July, we’ll be raising a glass to Drink Up Month, a celebration of San Diego’s vibrant beverage scene.

Last summer, we served you Drink Up Week and explored local Happy Hour deals, the history of mezcal, the pretty Pink Rose Cafe, super San Diego-themed craft beers, and over-the-top cocktails and mocktails.

This year, we’re feeling especially thirsty and plan to cover everything from coffee and tea, to smoothies, meaderies, and of course — more craft beer. The best part? You will help us shape our coverage.

Please take this survey to have your say in the Drink Up stories we put together next month. Which coffee shop should we try next? Where can we find the best smoothie in San Diego? Where’s your favorite Happy Hour spot? Tell us everything.

If you’re part of a local brewery, tea shop, bar, coffee shop, or anything in between, we want to hear from you, too. Email us if you’re interested in creating a month-long Drink Up special for SDtoday readers or sharing a locally-inspired recipe.

In the meantime, sip tight. It’ll be July in no time. Cheers, SD.

✈️ How to protect your gut health while traveling

gut-health-travel.jpg
It’s very common for travel to wreak havoc on our digestive system, due to a number of factors from eating new foods to time changes (yes, “gut-lag” is a thing). | Photo by Pendulum
We’ve all been there: a sunny beach, a gorgeous new city, a cute little cabin — and then you feel the dreaded rumble. Your stomach doesn’t feel good, and you have to get to a bathroom, pronto.

Don’t let that happen to you. Before your next summer trip, brush up on five tips to keep your gut happy on the go:

1. Stay hydrated. Stick to (safe) tap or bottled water.
2. Pack probiotics. Pro tip: Sprint to checkout (instead of the bathroom) for 20% off Metabolic Daily with code 6AMCITY.

News Notes
Weather
  • The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center announced El Niño conditions have arrived earlier than usual and are expected to grow stronger throughout the summer. What does that mean for San Diego? Keep your umbrella handy, because these weather patterns tend to bring cooler, wetter conditions. (Fox 5)
Biz
  • After a $2 million remodel, Best Western San Diego Zoo/SeaWorld Inn & Suites has reopened. The renovation of the 199-room property includes new room furnishings, curtains, and bedding — plus the addition of bunk beds to family suites. Guests will find a new fitness center and lobby coffee station, too. (Patch)
Open
  • Ocean Beach has welcomed Cass Street Bar and Harry’s Taco Club, a joint-concept restaurant at 5049 Newport Ave. The combo is made up of half modern pub fare and half Mexican-inspired cuisine. The concept comes from local restaurateur John Rudolph who operates a similar pairing in Pacific Beach. (OB Rag)
Community
  • Local sign-making company Category 6 LED is selling a special Pride edition of its replica Hillcrest sign that features a rainbow color scheme. The Hillcrest Business Association’s website says a portion of sales will help the community maintain its real Hillcrest sign.

  • The sky’s the limit for Point Loma High School student Orianna Russell. She’s one of 28 US students selected to attend an elite, 8-week US Navy Summer Flight Academy aviation program at Delaware State University this summer. Upon completion, Orianna will earn her FAA Private Pilot’s license. (ABC 10)

🐟 A new Birch ‘Beach’

New at Birch Aquarium: ‘Blue Beach’ and family-friendly happy hour series

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography has a new play area: Blue Beach, an outdoor zone on the south plaza (near Shark Shores at the Shark Head photo op) where visitors can relax and connect with the ocean.

The blue-hued space features seating, spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, and a 4,500-sqft floor mural that depicts a map of the depth of the underwater canyons off La Jolla Shores.

Birch says Blue Beach will also be home to a new, family-friendly happy hour series that runs Monday-Wednesday, 5-6:30 p.m., from Monday, July, 10 to Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The happy hour events are included with admission and will feature music, lawn games (we see you, cornhole), and pop-up interactions with Scripps scientists. There will be beer, wine, and small bites for sale by The French Gourmet. Pro tip: last call is at 6:20 p.m.

Hi, SD. All of this Drink Up chatter has me daydreaming about all of the great coffee Michael and I have tried over our time working together.

Last year, we hit up these 30 coffee shops around town to get our java fix and let me just tell you, I’m still dreaming of the views from Superbloom, the scones from Public Square Coffee House, and the cute merch and patio at Chikita Café. Put another pot on — we need more caffeine.
