February is the season of love, but we’re adding kindness to the mix. Today is National Random Acts of Kindness Day, but these acts can be performed any time of year.

From simple gestures to volunteering your time, here are six random acts of kindness you can take part in to make a neighbor’s day or brighten up the community.

Bring treats to work

Next time you’re on the way to work, grab some coffee or pastries for your coworkers. Pro tip: Donuts from Nomad Donuts and brews from HOB Coffee are a perfect pairing.
Let your old books start a new chapter. Donate them — along with media like CDs and DVDs — to the Friends of San Diego Library. Donations will be resold at the library’s bookstore and 100% of proceeds go to the San Diego Public Library.

Show local businesses some love

It’s no secret that we love our local businesses. Next time you stop by your go-to spots, tip generously or write a positive review.

Plant native species

Add some green to your community by planting native species. Use the National Wildlife Federation’s Native Plant Finder to start your search.

San Diego Humane Society Dogs

Help our furry friends

Consider fostering or adopting a furry friend in need of a home, or volunteer at one of the San Diego Humane Society’s local shelters. You can also donate monetarily or drop off blankets, toys, food, and supplies.

DYK? Adoption fees are waived through Sunday, Feb. 19, when you take home an adult dog (ages 7+ months).

Storytelling workshops for older adults coming to Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) has a story to tell you. It received a $250,000 grant from the E.A. Michelson Philanthropy to offer free programming to adults ages 55+, and it’s the only museum in California to be selected as a recipient.

The newly-renovated museum will use the funding to launch “Reflections: An art-making storytelling workshop by MCASD,” including multimedia art-making seminars and lectures on the topic of storytelling. The grant is specifically dedicated to classes for older adults and recognizes the importance of showcasing works from older artists.

This program will also serve as a social opportunity for older residents. According to the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation, 1-in-3 adults ages 65+ lives alone.

If you know someone who’s got a tale to tell, sign them up for more info. Class space is limited, and sessions will run from May 2023 into next year.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Michael.

Editor’s pick: Happy Friday, San Diego. We’re past the halfway mark in February, but the second half of the month is sounding good. It seems some classic movies (or books) are getting musical adaptations and coming to our city. “The Outsiders” debuts at the La Jolla Playhouse this Sunday, and “Mean Girls” is coming to the San Diego Civic Theatre on Tuesday, Feb. 28. What’s next? “Top Gun” the musical?
