Another round of winter King Tides are expected to return to parts of San Diego’s coastline today — Feb. 9, 2024.
The phenomenon refers to exceptionally high tides linked to the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. According to the California Coastal Commission’s King Tides Project , this should be the final round of extreme tides this winter — following the January 2024 King Tides . Locally, waves could reach up to 7.3 ft.
Here are the predicted high tides, via this map
:
- La Jolla — 8:08 a.m., 6.68 ft
- Imperial Beach — 8:14 a.m., 6.62 ft
- San Diego Bay (Broadway) — 8:14 a.m., 7.12 ft
- San Diego Bay (National City) — 8:18 a.m., 7.31 ft
- Mission Bay (Quivira Basin) — 8:19 a.m., 6.76 ft
The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement for high surf at San Diego County beaches through 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8; there are no watches or advisories yet for Feb. 9 — but that could change.
Pro tip: If you’re able to safely photograph the waves during the phenomenon, you can participate in the California King Tides ongoing “community science project” by sending your photos to kingtides@coastal.ca.gov
. The project helps visualize future sea level by observing and tracking the highest tides of the present.
