News Notes

Traffic

California’s new “daylighting” law is now being enforced in San Diego. Drivers who park within 20 ft of any marked or unmarked crosswalk could be given a $77.50 citation. The city isn’t required to paint curbs or put up signs, which is leaving some local drivers confused and frustrated. (CBS 8)

Development

Construction is truckin’ along at East Village Green Park on 13th, 14th, F and G streets — downtown SD’s largest park set to open by the end of this year. The 2.1-acre project will include a community center, playground with interactive water features, an off-leash dog park, and a 185-space parking garage.

Civic

Registered voters in District 1 will get a ballot in the mail next week for the April 8 Special Primary Election to fill Nora Vargas’ vacant seat. If no candidate gets the majority of votes, the two top candidates will move onto a Special General Election on July 1.

Legacy

Lifelong local leader Leon Williams — the first Black person elected to the San Diego City Council in 1969 — has died at the age of 102. See his legacy on Leon Williams Drive, a block of E Street named after him in Golden Hill, or learn about his life at the San Diego History Center. (NBC 7)

Concert

Grammy Award-winning country singer Brad Paisley will headline Gallagher Square at Petco Park on Saturday, June 7. Paisley will perform his “Truck Still Works World Tour” with special guests Walker Hayes and Avery Anna. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, March 7, at 10 a.m.

Weather

Don’t forget to spring forward this Sunday, March 9 — daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m., so turn your clocks forward one hour. This means the sun will start setting a little before 7 p.m. in San Diego next week, giving you more daytime to play around our city.

Announced

The San Diego Symphony released its 2025 Conrad Prebys Summer Season schedule at The Rady Shell. The bayfront concert venue’s lineup includes Cynthia Erivo, Maren Morris, Boyz II Men, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Subscription packages are available now, as well as some single-show tickets.

Looking for lunch in San Diego? What about a salad or a sandwich? Or a fast + casual spot? Don’t compromise – or break the bank. We’ve got the best lunch deals around town (including some of our favorites).

      Fast and casual

      City Tacos
With eight locations, this SD chain spans from Imperial Beach to Encinitas. But let’s taco ‘bout food: On a $15 budget, you can get three tacos — feel free to mix it up, but we’re partial to the SD Carne Asada. Pro tip: Visit on Taco Tuesday to save 10% on tacos, and put that savings toward a $2.50 Mexican beer.

      Pizza

      Mr. Moto
This local shop was founded in Pacific Beach in 2015 where it gained a reputation for its creative pies and by-the-slice specialties. Generally, a single slice will cost about $5, but we recommend the combo with two slices and a soda.

      Salads and bowls

      Grater Greens
You won’t be-leaf how many combos you’ll find at this fresh Mission Valley spot, like the Asian Salad for $13 and Apple Cranberry Salad for $12.50. Or you can create your own bowl with greens and grains for under $15, depending on your selections.

      The Buy

A pack of seamless underwear. These no-show thongs for women have a 4.4-star rating, are stretchy and comfortable, and won’t show underneath clothes.

New restaurant alert. Wildflour Delicatessen, local Chef Phillip Esteban’s new seafood-centric eatery, is now open in Barracks 19 at Liberty Station.

We checked out the space this week and it is lovely. It’s a deli, bakery, coffee shop + cocktail bar all wrapped into one, with a blend of Scandinavian, New York City, and SoCal influences. Try the Buttermilk Panna Cotta with miso caramel, passion fruit, and togarashi crumble, and ask about the natural wines. Eventually, it’ll be open daily, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
