We take great pride in offering our weekly newsletter to you, our valued subscribers, for free — and we’re committed to keeping it that way. But we need your help. That’s why we’ve created a campaign to raise $500 over the next 10 days.
When you choose to support SDtoday, you’re investing in more than just a weekly newsletter — you’re investing in a stronger, more informed community. Your contributions go directly toward creating more of the local stories you love, expanding our coverage, and ensuring we can remain a free resource for all.
If you’ve gotten something out of being subscribed to our newsletter, like finding that life-changing concert in our Events section, or planning a memorable family day with our City Guides — we’re calling on you now to help support our mission.

We take a positive, unbiased approach to local reporting. While we’ll always let you know about decided-upon policies impacting our city, we skip the political discourse that can feel unending and draining. We believe reading about what’s going on in your city should be a positive experience.
The truth is, we love what we do. Sharing the most positive local news and events with our readers fuels us every day. If you’ve felt the love for our product too, help us today with a one-time contribution that supports local storytelling.

Despite last week’s three-day storm, February’s rainfall totals remain far below normal. Historically, this is the county’s wettest month, but we’re back in a stretch of dry, warm weather this week. Rainfall totals have “caught up” before in March and April, but forecasters aren’t sure it will happen this year. (The San Diego Union-Tribune + CBS 8)
Civic
Due to the city’s $252.2 million deficit, Mayor Todd Gloria announced budget cuts this week intended to help the city save $5.3 million while preserving services for residents. While 31 city jobs have been reduced or consolidated, Gloria said firefighters, police officers, and paramedics remain a top priority for SD.
Development
Downtown’s Horton Plaza redevelopment project may be in trouble. The effort was supposed to create 700,000-sqft of new office space, restaurants, and shops at the seven-block site, but the lead development firm owes $350+ million in unpaid debt. If the debt isn’t paid in 90 days, the firm could lose the property. (CBS 8)
Closed

The hotspot was anchored by concepts created by YouTube superstar Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien and Grain & Grit Collective. Zien and the hospitality group have amicably parted ways. Explore other local food halls.

Biz
Hob Nob Hill, the diner serving comfort food in Bankers Hill since 1944, has been sold. This is only the third owner in the diner’s 81-year history, but the restaurant’s name and beloved homemade recipes will stay the same. OK, now we’re craving that Cinnamon Swirl French Toast. (CBS 8)

Stadium
Petco Park | Capacity: 42,000+
The Padres’ downtown ballpark can hold San Diego’s largest live music audience. The Rolling Stones were the first act to play at the venue in November 2005, but many big names have packed the stadium over the past 20 years. The 2025 lineup includes Teddy Swims and Blues Traveler with Gin Blossoms and Spin Doctors.
Outdoor setting
North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre | Capacity: 20,000
Chula Vista’s outdoor venue hosts most of its concerts from May to November. The 2025 lineup includes the Outlaw Music Festival with Willie Nelson + Bob Dylan, plus Incubus, Nelly, and Billy Idol.
Concert hall
The Sound | Capacity: 1,900
The Del Mar Fairgrounds welcomed this music hall in 2023, and it’s been making soundwaves since Ziggy Marley headlined its debut.

I’m not crying, you’re crying. San Diego FC’s inaugural season officially kicks off this weekend, and the new MLS team unveiled this “Dear San Diego” love letter by local poet Rudy Francisco.
As a local, this letter gave me all the feels. My favorite lines: “We are different communities that join hands and become a cultural mosaic. Here, you can find pride on every corner.”
The team’s first away match is this Sunday, Feb. 23; join a watch party at Mavericks Beach Club in PB. The home opener is on Saturday, March 1 at Snapdragon Stadium. Let’s go, SD.
