News Notes

A plan to turn La Jolla’s former US Bank building on Girard Avenue into a food hall with up to seven new restaurants by 2026 is drawing high interest from prospective tenants, including bakeries and coffee shops. One thing’s for sure — SD loves its food halls. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Development

Construction is underway on the revitalization of the Mira Mesa Epicentre. San Diego County will rebuild and maintain part of the facility as a community rec center that will include a pickleball and basketball court, community garden, music room, and study + work areas. Construction should wrap up by fall 2026.

San Diegan

North Park resident and educator Paola Capó García has been selected as the City of San Diego’s new Poet Laureate, an ambassador for local spoken word + literary arts. Succeeding Jason Magabo Perez, Capó García will serve from 2025 to 2027 and create original works to engage San Diegans through poetry.

Open

After a short hiatus, North Park’s buzzy cocktail bar Polite Provisions has reopened. Patrons can expect “fresh elixirs” on the menu and familiar, friendly faces behind the bar. It’s open Monday-Thursday, 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Friday-Sunday, 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.

    The Wrap

Speaking of brunch, I tried DJ Brunch at ARLO in Mission Valley not too long ago. On weekends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the restaurant has a DJ spinning 1990s + 2000s jams from the patio and honestly, I did a lot of dancing in my seat.

The brunch offerings were so good, too — don’t sleep on the Tocino Fried Rice and the Croffle (a croissant-meets-waffle). Pro tip: Make reservations.
