In 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of thousands of San Diego college students and declared, “I am convinced, deep in my heart, that by using non-violence we can turn racial discord into a symphony of brotherhood.”

This impactful speech was delivered at both San Diego State University and Point Loma Nazarene University (then known as California Western University) during one of the few times Dr. King came to San Diego. He visited Calvary Baptist Church in Barrio Logan in 1962 where he addressed the costs of prejudice, but his exact number of local visits is not definitively known.

Today, San Diegans can find tributes to MLK across the city like the Gaslamp Quarter’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Promenade that contains artwork like Melvin Edwards’ “Breaking of the Chains.” There’s also a 10-mile stretch of the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway — aka state Route 94 — decorated with murals in his honor.

📊 How would you improve Balboa Park?

What does a perfect walk in the park look like? The City of San Diego wants to know so it can improve Balboa Park.

Officials are currently creating the Balboa Park Projects Prioritization Framework — an initiative that was introduced during last year’s first-ever State of Balboa Park address. The effort aims to find an unbiased way to allocate the landmark’s limited funding to best serve projects with the most impact.

The city has hired AEA Consulting to lead the charge. Locals are able to take a survey and provide opinions through Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024. The city is also hosting four public engagement sessions to gather input. The first meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 30, 6-8 p.m., at Bankers Hill Club.

All feedback will be used during the analysis phase; the final framework is expected to be presented for adoption in December 2024.

Good morning, San Diego. Did you know, the Casbah is turning 35? The small, Middletown venue only holds ~200 people, but many legendary artists have stopped by on their way to super stardom — imagine being able to say you saw Nirvana or The White Stripes before they blew up.

While many of the celebratory shows are sold out, you can grab commemorative merch to show love to the longtime, local music hall.
