We wish Thanksgiving planning was simple as pie, but there are a lot of steps involved. You can take one thing off your plate before you celebrate Halloween: baking dessert. We’ve tracked down 11 places in San Diego getting ready to take pie preorders.
San Diego’s annual bake sale is back, so you can have peace of mind (and a piece of pie) for the holidays. Mama’s Kitchen is committed to providing meals to chronically ill San Diegans, and each pie sold contributes 12 meals to locals — but you’ll need to order by Saturday, Nov. 18 (or until supplies run out).

This eatery makes a pie for every occasion, but Friday, Nov. 17, is the deadline to place Thanksgiving orders. Sales start on Wednesday, Nov. 1, and you can select from four varieties to be picked up at any of its three San Diego locations.

This SoCal-founded bakery has locations in Carlsbad and Del Mar that have pumpkin, apple, and pecan pies on the menu — in addition to seasonal desserts like cakes, cheesecakes, and cookies. The bakery recommends placing orders by Saturday, Nov. 18, to ensure they’re ready for Thanksgiving.
Starry Lane Bakery
This Hillcrest bakery ranks among USA Today 10Best’s top gluten-free bakeries and its allergen-friendly baked goods are free of ingredients like dairy, soy, and eggs. The menu includes pies like apple, cherry, and its seasonal pumpkin. The shop starts taking preorders Wednesday, Nov. 1.
This iconic Julian bakery has town and garden locations, both offering over a dozen varieties of whole pies. If you’re not looking to make the trek to the East County mountains, you can now place an order for La Mesa pick-up day on Wednesday, Nov. 22.

The agriculture business in San Diego County is growing, according to the recently released 2022 Crop Report. The industry is valued at $1.78 billion, a 1.4% increase from 2021. Per the report, avocados saw the greatest annual increase in value, likely due to fruitful weather conditions.

Blue Whale San Diego has swum into its new home at 834 Kline St. in La Jolla, the former site of Nekter Juice Bar. The “beach cafe” features coffees, smoothies, and matcha drinks plus breakfast and lunch dishes. It’s open daily, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

San Diego Unified School District held its first meeting to discuss the full modernization of Bird Rock Elementary. The project includes technology and parking improvements, building renovations, and the removal of portable classrooms. The district’s next meeting is set for Wednesday, Nov. 1, likely at the school. Project Street Vet is providing medical care to unhoused pets living in San Diego at no cost to owners. The nonprofit started in 2020 to address the need in Los Angeles and recently expanded to San Diego, relying on donations to provide services. (Fox 5)
