This 46-acre course was designed by Ted Robinson, former president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects — and it’s where Tiger Woods once won a Junior World Title. Hit the beach after your round, it’s so close.

SD Balboa Park Golf Course

The skyline views from Balboa Park Golf Course are spectacular, too.

🌊 Brilliant bioluminescence research

Scripps study highlights what fueled historic ‘red tide’ of spring 2020 in San Diego

SD Spring 2020 red tide bioluminescence

In spring 2020, everyone in San Diego was buzzing about the major red tide off our coast — you remember, the phenomenon that created neon bioluminescence at local beaches at night.

Turns out, the unforgettable glow can be attributed to Lingulodinium polyedra, dinoflagellates described by Scripps Institution of Oceanography as “the Michael Phelps of the plankton world.”

Scripps scientists released a new study showing the plankton species created the “dense blooms” (aka the growth of phytoplankton biomass) because they’re remarkably speedy swimmers, traveling vertically up to 10 body lengths per second for nearly 24 hours.

Researchers deployed instruments into local waters to capture the planktons’ speeds. They swam up during the day to photosynthesize and down at night to replenish their nutrients.

The vertical migration pattern fueled the 2020 eventand while it was a lovely visual — Scripps says it was a “harmful algal bloom” that led to fish dying.

From the editor
I’m really looking forward to the long holiday weekend. There is so much great live music happening around town — especially Sunday, Sept. 3.

“Round Here,” my husband and I are heading to Counting Crows at The Rady Shell. Over at Petco Park, it’ll feel like an “Island in the Sun” when Weezer takes the stage, and at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, the Summer Block Party vibes will be anything but “Weak” with Jodeci and SWV. Enjoy your weekend, friends.
