🌳 Nature is for everybody

Take an accessible hike on one of these trails in San Diego

The outdoors are for everybody — and there are plenty of hikes in our area that are friendly to wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility aids. Get some fresh air on three of our favorite accessible trails.

San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center Loop, San Elijo Ecological Reserve and Nature Center
Perfect for a quick nature walk, this loop offers views of birds foraging in salt marsh and mudflat habitats. You’ll spy lots of interesting, native wildlife at San Elijo Ecological Reserve — from ospreys and great egrets, to the pygmy blue butterfly.

Balboa Park Gardens Loop, Balboa Park
This paved 1.4-mile loop is the perfect way to see the gardens at the landmark. Take in the smell of wildflowers on this relatively flat trail that is typically 6 ft wide. Pro tip: You could start near the Balboa Park Carousel, then follow the trail south.

Mission Beach boardwalk in San Diego

For a breezy, beachfront path, cruise Ocean Front Walk from Mission to Pacific beach.

Ocean Front Boardwalk, W. Mission Bay Drive at Ocean Front Walk
Soak up the sun in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach on the iconic, paved, waterfront path. The 5.9-mile, out-and-back boardwalk averages at 8 ft wide and there are accessible bathrooms. Pro tip: Regulars suggest getting there early to beat the crowds.

News Notes
Civic
  • The Planning Commission has voted in favor of San Diego’s Housing Action Package 2.0 — but without high-density Senate Bill 10. The optional law would’ve eliminated single-family zoning in many parts of SD, allowing for structures with up to three stories and 10 units to be built on single-family parcels. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Development
  • The city wants to hire a consultant to help guide plans to buy or build a new City Hall in downtown San Diego. The building needs to be at least 500,000 sqft, but downtown is currently strapped for office space. Bids are due by Monday, Aug. 28. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Closing
  • After nine years in business, Pacific Islander Beer Co. in Santee will close tomorrow. Owner Ku’uipoaloha Lawler attributes the closure to the rising costs of rent and operations, but says he’ll forever be grateful to “the customers that became friends, the friends that became family.” (SanDiegoBeer.news)
Open
  • Hotel del Coronado has reopened its restored Windsor Cottage to members of The Del Club and guests who opt into its new Ocean Concierge Club. Built in 1905, the historical Windsor Cottage is now open daily, 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m., offering breakfast and lunch buffets, bar service, and dinner.
Active
  • Thinking about using your bike to get around town? SANDAG will host a free Bike Commuting 101 webinar on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 12 p.m. Locals can learn about bike laws, safety, hand signals, where it’s best to ride, and ask questions. Register to join.
Sports
  • San Diego Wave FC just scored big — 18-year-old forward Jaedyn Shaw signed a new contract to stay with the team through the 2026 season. The standout made her professional premiere last July at age 17, becoming the youngest NWSL player to score during her debut.
Finance
  • A Banksy got everyday investors 32% returns? You read that right. Thousands of investors are smiling all the way to the bank thanks to the fine-art investing platform Masterworks. Investors have benefited from 14 sales with returns including 17.8%, 21.5%, and 35%. SDtoday readers can skip the waitlist and join.†*

SANDAG will celebrate another milestone in its ongoing Build NCC project this Saturday, Aug. 12: The grand opening of the San Elijo Activity Hub Park & Ride in Encinitas.

The new facility — located at 2581 Via Poco, behind the Chevron station — features 166 parking spaces, bike racks, and info on how to access and explore nearby trails and the San Elijo Lagoon. SANDAG said it’ll also serve as a centralized location where locals and visitors can use the new HOV/carpool lanes on Interstate 5.

Saturday’s free community celebration will include snow cones, games, a guided lagoon tour, and a chance to check out new biking and walking paths.

We’ve been keeping an eye on Build NCC, the ~$882 million project to improve highway, rail, environmental, and coastal access in Solana Beach, Encinitas, and Carlsbad. Construction on the remaining parts of the plan is expected to continue through 2024.

Hi, friends. Since we’re talking hiking, I’m seeing some fun nature-inspired events this month across the county.

There’s a ranger-led hike to Annie’s Canyon on Sunday, Aug. 20, at San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, and a Nature Discovery Table at Lincoln Acres County Park on Saturday, Aug. 26. Call each park ahead of time to learn more.
