It’s only natural that you’d want to get out and explore during the summer. San Diego County features 340+ parks and recreational spots, and we’ve rounded up 30 outdoor places worth discovering or revisiting.
Lakeview Park, 650 Foxhall Dr. Reel in a good time at this San Marcos destination that has trail access, picnicking spaces, and allows fishing from Discovery Lake’s shore and dock. Kids will have a blast climbing in the playground or cooling off at the splash pads.
Coronado Tidelands Park, 2000 Mullinex Dr.
You can’t beat the views at this scenic park. Along the walking and biking paths you’ll be able to see the Coronado Bridge, San Diego Bay, and the city skyline. Plus, there’s playground equipment, fields for sports, a skate park, and a small beach.
Collier County Park, 626 E Street
This 8-acre space in Ramona is great for an active day. Younger kids will have fun at the two playgrounds, while the older crowd can use the basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts. There are also picnicking spaces and walking paths lined with native plants.
Maruta Gardner Playground,1100 W. Mission Bay Dr.
This half-acre park and playground can be found in Bonita Cove at Mission Bay and is named to honor a community leader. It was renovated in 2020, and offers climbing structures, ADA-compliant equipment and paths, and bay access. For more family fun, Mission Beach is across the street.
Felicita County Park, 742 Clarence Lane
You’ll find an abundance of history, ancient oak trees, and activities in this 346-acre Escondido space. The park was once a Kumeyaay Indian village and is named for Felicita LaChappa — a prominent figure in the Kumeyaay community. In 2008 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its Native American and pioneer history.

Following the Fourth of July, San Diego County is reminding pet owners that they can contact County Animal Services’ lost and found to locate pets who escaped and were recovered. The department is also waiving reclaim fees through Monday, July 10.
Environment
San Diego will be replacing a floating restroom in El Capitan Reservoir — one of nine operated by the city. These facilities provide bathroom access to boaters, helping to keep pollution out of the city’s water supply. The new restroom is expected to last for 10 years. (San Diego-Union Tribune)

We’re flipping out for The Friendly’s newest location in the Convoy District. The popular local chain — known for its OG Dirty Flat Top burger and other creations — is now open at 4681 Convoy St. #F.

Waterfront Park is getting a colorful new display with the help of muralist Hanna Gundrum. The artist partnered with the nonprofit Revision Project to mentor local artists and create a mural that celebrates neurodiversity in our community. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Ready to roll? Skate Sundays are coming back to the Gaslamp Quarter this summer at Fifth and Island avenues, 5-8 p.m. The fun starts on July 9 with a poppin’ 2000s theme, followed by a groovy 1970s night on July 16.

Good morning, San Diego. I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July. In case anyone has a craving for fried food today, I have a recommendation. I recently went to CooCoo’s Nest in Little Italy Food Hall — a collaboration between Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien + Grain & Grit Collective.
The chicken was so good it doesn’t need sauce, but there are plenty of options to dip into; the Korean Gochujang sauce was an unexpected favorite of mine.
