Local legends

Pizza Port, 5 local brewpubs
You may know this brand for its beer, but with pizza in its name, it uses wheat in another big way. At the brewpubs, you’ll find many pies — including options named for local towns and cities.

Surfrider Pizza, La Mesa
This shop has been making waves with its hand-tossed pizzas and dough made fresh daily. We love the signature Surf Rider Pizza and recommend finishing your meal with dessert from the restaurant’s Swell Bakery display case.

Fancier fare

Ambrogio15, 5 locations
This shop offers a fresh perspective — and fresh ingredients — on pizza. Go here for a relaxed, sit-down experience and to try the chain’s signature Milano-style entrees.

Herb & Wood, Little Italy
Local celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey opened this restaurant to celebrate Mediterranean flavors, including pizza. The wood-fired menu pairs perfectly with the cocktails, making dining here an upper-crust experience.

Cross-country crusts

Bronx Pizza, Hillcrest
If you’re looking for thin, New York-style crust, this shop is your go-to. In 2022, Yelp named it the No. 7 best pizza shop in the US (cash only).

Chicago Bros Pizzeria, Grantville
The Chicago roots run deep at this pizzeria, but the crust is even deeper. You’ll find a huge deep-dish menu, or you can opt for a thinner crust or a calzone.

URBN, North Park
It’s “apizza” — as in New Haven-style, the way URBN makes its pies. The menu features options like Sausage + Peppers, Mashed Potato, and for a true New England taste, Fresh Clam.

San Diego-born Shaun White has soared into snowboarding history, and recently, he glided onto his own documentary on Max. The three-time Olympic gold medalist’s docuseries “Shaun White: The Last Run” has debuted its first episode on the streaming service.

The 4-part series will release a new episode each Thursday this month. Episode 1, “Becoming Shaun,” covers White’s early life including his upbringing in San Diego — more specifically, Carlsbad — and the support of his family. White also needed to undergo two surgeries at an early age because he was born with a congenital heart defect. After his recovery, he embraced local athletics, which led him to try snowboarding.

Future episodes will cover “The Flying Tomato’s” successes in the Olympics, struggles as an athlete, and his decision to retire after the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

From the editor
Happy Friday, San Diego. Growing up, Friday night was pizza night in my house, and it was a sacred tradition — though it used to require a trip to Blockbuster to rent a movie. I hope today’s newsletter inspires you to carry on the tradition, and I’d be honored if you included a local beer in the mix.
