We know the question on your mind — when will it get hot? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for July, August, and September. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for the summer.
Reminder: The first day of summer is Wednesday, June 21.
The summer 2023 temps will be warmer than normal in San Diego County.
Think hot. San Diego County has a 33-50% chance of temperatures leaning above normal — on par with national trends.
🌨️ Precipitation
Although 2023 has been quite rainy locally, NOAA predicts SD will experience ordinary rainfall amounts for summer — so, not much.
☀️ Drought
NOAA predicts drought conditions will be kept at bay. January-May 2023 made for the ninth wettest year to date in San Diego County over the past 129 years — with nearly 8 inches of rainfall above normal.
Here’s to a nice, beachy summer in SD.

What ice cream flavor best embodies San Diego?
If the ice cream is strawberry, that means it counts as a serving of fruit — right? Asking for a friend. | Photo via @Kn_chowdown + @hammondsicecream
Calling all lovers of San Diego, warm weather, and ice cream. We want to know — if our city was a flavor of ice cream, what would it be? What local ingredients would it contain? Would it be ribboned with locally procured sea salt caramel or crumbled cookies from Blackmarket Bakery?
Share your locally inspired ice cream flavor with us by Friday, June 30, and we may feature it in an upcoming newsletter — just make sure it includes one to three local ingredients (bonus points if you list the local spot to source the ingredients and include a catchy name for your frosty concoction).
Need some inspiration? Here are two examples to get your stomachs grumbling:
🇺🇸 US: A waffle cone of vanilla bean ice cream laden with chunks of apple pie.
🇯🇵 Japan: A taiyaki filled with taro soft serve and topped with a black sesame cookie.
Hi, SD. After a whole lot of June Gloom, the sunshine this past weekend was much needed. My family and I saw the break in the clouds and headed to the beach — along with what seemed like all of San Diego.
La Jolla Shores was so crowded, it truly felt like summer had arrived. Yes, the sky was still gray and the water was cold, but it sure felt good to enjoy that shoreline alongside our fellow locals.
