16 of San Diego’s coolest ice cream shops
If summer had a flavor, it would probably taste like ice cream. We’re still trying to beat June Gloom, but a frozen treat always puts us in a summer state of mind — and we’re never too cool to visit one of these local ice cream shops.
This ice cream shop has scoops on tap — a nod to San Diego’s beer scene — and a rotating menu that sources flavors from top independent creameries in the US. Recently, the store was redesigned and now serves drinks from Moniker Coffee Co.
Here, you’ll find a variety of flavors with their own twists. The shop gets its inspiration from nieves de garrafa, a Mexican dessert staple of ice cream churned in a pot. The sweet treat has become popular in San Diego, so much that the new Randy’s Donuts in Serra Mesa uses Sadie’s scoops in its ice cream donut sandwiches.
Since opening in 2020, this family-owned shop has become a sweet success. Last year it expanded to a new space where it can handcraft flavors for larger crowds. The “FTW Chocolate” is a real Wynner — it was named one of the best chocolate ice creams by the North American Ice Cream Association in 2021.
Grab your ice cream-loving buddies and give this small batch, craft shop a try. It aims to recreate your favorite flavors, but the menus sprinkles in some unlikely recipes in hopes of making a new classic.
This shop has been making ice cream in National City since 1948, and it still makes it the same way. It’s become a community staple, but don’t let its old-fashioned ways fool you, you’ll find your future favorites here. Pistachio Avocado, anyone?

A vacant dirt parking lot at Greeley Avenue in Logan Heights recently received a colorful makeover — transformed into a baseball diamond that looked like it popped straight out of a comic book.
The field was designed by Riverside-based artist Geoff Gouveia. The pop art-inspired project was more than just an art piece — it was commissioned as part of MLB’s “Play Ball” weekend that encourages little leaguers to “play here play anywhere.” The initiative hopes to encourage young baseball fans to keep on swinging, regardless of where they are.
Over 100 kids participated in a baseball clinic on Sunday, June 11. They were joined by former Padres players, MLB ambassadors, and community members who helped this event become a home run.
Good morning, San Diego. I’m a huge ice cream fan, and I have a soft spot for soft serve. I love going to Mr. Frostie in Pacific Beach, which has been a staple of the community since 1949. But, nothing shows my love for San Diego more than a trip to Mr. Softee at Petco Park when I get brown and gold sprinkles on my ice cream (go Padres).
