🤝 A sign of community support
Coming soon: La Mesa’s very own Downtown District sign

Communities like North Park, Little Italy, and the Gaslamp Quarter each have their own identity signs. Soon, La Mesa will too thanks to a project fully funded by locals because the adage is true — it takes a village.
The ~16-ft-tall archway will be located on La Mesa Boulevard at Palm Avenue — in the heart of the Village — designed to serve as a gateway into the bustling business district lined with small businesses and restaurants.
The left and right beams of the sign will boast the community’s nickname — “Jewel of the Hills” — and the center will say “Downtown La Mesa Village, Inc. 1912.”
Steve Clay was the first local to paint a tile for the sign’s columns.
Part of the fundraising efforts included the LMVA partnering with the La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation to sell tiles and brass plaques to the public. They will be painted and displayed on the two columns that will support the sign.
So, when it’s all said and done, the locals who supported the endeavor will continue to physically hold up the sign via the bases adorned with 1,512 hand-painted, 4-by-4-inch tiles.
All of the tiles are now sold and are being painted at CeramiCafe in Grossmont Center, and the LMVA tells SDtoday they expect to wrap up the “tile painting phase” by the month’s end.
The LMVA says the project’s engineering phase will follow and hopefully after that, construction of the sign will begin. We’ll keep you updated as it all starts to take shape.

🍓 Strawberry fields forever (er, for now)
Carlsbad Strawberry Company open for 2023 U-pick season
Another pro tip: the redder the strawberry, the better. | Photo via Monica Garske + SDtoday
Let me take you down, ‘cause I’m going to strawberry fields — the spot in Carlsbad, that is.
The Carlsbad Strawberry Company at 1050 Cannon Rd. is in the midst of its 2023 U-pick season, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, through mid-July.
The berry basics: Admission is $5 per person (kids 5 and under are free) and includes the sunflower maze, shaded seating areas, and games. Another $12 per person includes a bucket and access to the field’s rows to trim your berries straight from the shrubs.
Here are a few pro tips:
Wear close-toed shoes because the rows can get muddy.
Only use the bucket you’re given upon entry — don’t overfill it or bring your own bags.
Leave your purses, backpacks, and pets at home.
Visit the sheep and goats ($6 per person); we hare there are rabbits, too.
Bring a picnic to enjoy at the tables — withyour fresh strawberries for dessert.
My husband and I recently managed to sneak away for a date night, and Casa Gabriela was on our radar. The Mexican restaurant opened earlier this year and offers elevated eats in a really cute setting (where Bo-Beau used to be in La Mesa Village).
For dinner, we shared Chef Gaby’s La Jefa Asado, a molcajete for two that includes steak, pollo a la brasa, shrimp, nopales, and more. We finished our meal with the Brown Bag Churros and a cafecito, of course. So good.
