The Big Wheel. The high-flying entertainment. The wild, fried fare. The summer concerts on the Grandstand Stage. The San Diego County Fair is coming, y’all — returning to the Del Mar Fairgrounds Wednesday, June 7-Tuesday, July 4.

The summertime staple began as an agricultural fair in 1880 and moved to its current seaside location in 1936. Today, it’s one of the largest county fairs in the US. We’ve put together a guide to help you make the most of your visit — let’s get out there.

The food

This year, the fair’s midway will offer 100+ food vendors including:
  • Funnel Cake Express
  • Pink’s Hot Dogs
  • Olde Tyme Ice Cream
  • Northgate Guacamole
  • Tasti Chips
  • Dole Whip
  • Wood Pit BBQ
  • Bacon A-Fair
  • Linda’s Pizza
  • Fried A Fair
  • Ricky’s California Corn Dog
  • Australian Battered Potatoes
Of course, fair favorite Chicken Charlie’s will be there, offering its fair menu featuring Deep-Fried Oreos, Fried Avocados, the Maui Chicken Pineapple Bowl, the Krispy Kreme Triple Cheeseburger, and more.

Pro tips: Look for the Secret ‘Stache Speakeasy — it’s not on the map — you mustache a bartender for hints to the secret spot. Oh, and for even more fun fair food, check out this year’s Fair-tastic Food Competition.

Whether you’re almost ready to retire or just (wisely) planning ahead, there are five tips that can help optimize savings when withdrawing your investments.

Test your knowledge:
  1. Don’t dive straight into your 401(k) or IRA — you could cost yourself years’ worth of income in retirement savings. Tip or Mistake?
  2. Don’t automatically claim Social Security benefits at age 62. Tip or Mistake?
  3. Do start auto-withdrawing money from your 401(k) when you turn 59-and-a-half. Tip or Mistake?*

News Notes

Weather
  • After an on-brand “May Gray,” many San Diegans hope “June Gloom” passes quickly because it’s been “too cold” — especially at the coast. The National Weather Service says June will kick off with cool temps, a deep marine layer, and a slight chance of rain. (Fox 5 + National Weather Service)
Traffic
  • The 2023 Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Running Series is tomorrow and Sunday, so expect some road closures and detours near Balboa Park and downtown San Diego between 5:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. There will also be some freeway off-ramp closures, and “no parking” areas. Keep your eyes peeled for signs.
Development
  • Father Joe’s Villages unveiled its plans to build two eight-story buildings in downtown San Diego and near Barrio Logan, each with 100 affordable housing units. The buildings — slated to open in 2026 — are part of the nonprofit’s ongoing Turning the Key initiative that aims to create 2,000 affordable housing units. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Open
  • After a lengthy lull, Loveland Reservoir in Alpine has reopened. Sweetwater Authority drained and closed the reservoir last fall during drought conditions, much to the dismay of East County residents. It’s now open daily for hiking, fishing, and bird-watching — 6 a.m.-6 p.m. through September, and 6 a.m.-5 p.m. October-February.
Ranked
  • Based on factors like schools, health care systems, and recreation, WalletHub ranked San Diego the No. 6 best place in the US to raise a family in 2023. SD got high marks in family fun and we can see why — check out our guide to kid-friendly local fun. (WalletHub)
Community
  • I got next. Wells Park in El Cajon has upgraded its basketball courts and they’re now open. The courts feature new concrete, surfacing, hoops, benches, and lighting and were funded by a Community Development Block Grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Eat
  • Extraordinary Desserts might be the best independent cookie shop in the US. The beloved sweet spot by Chef Karen Krasne is stacked up against 20 other nominees in this USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice contest. You can vote for the local biz once daily through 9 a.m. Monday, June 26.
Drink
  • As SeaWorld San Diego’s buzzy Arctic Rescue roller coaster opens today, the theme park will also debut its Arctic Rescue Hard Seltzer created by Mike Hess Brewing. A portion of the canned seltzer’s sales will benefit the Alaska SeaLife Center and its ongoing mission of animal rescue and conservation.

From the editor
Happy Friday, San Diego. After a long walk with my family along the Embarcadero last weekend, we ate lunch at 664 TJ Birrieria in Barrio Logan — one of my favorite spots for birria in San Diego. The traditional birria tacos and birria ramen are so good here, and this brand has several locations including National City, Chula Vista, and City Heights.

The Barrio Logan eatery is on Newton Avenue where you can also admire the beautiful jacaranda trees in their purple blooming glory — my pal Michael’s favorite.
