Petco Park will celebrate its 20th birthday in 2024 — but it will also mark a new beginning. Gallagher Square will get major renovations as part of a $20 million project to expand its offerings and better serve the surrounding East Village community.

🌳 The East Village experience

Since Petco Park was built, it’s always aimed to be “more than a ballpark.” When the venue isn’t hosting Padres games or major events, Gallagher Square is open to the public. Once the Gallagher Square Renovation is complete, visitors can expect:
  • A playground and play area with equipment for a wider range of abilities
  • An off-leash dog park
  • An improved Play Ball field
  • Temporary pickleball courts
  • Art installations showcasing local artists
  • New turf and native plants
The project also includes the new Tony Gwynn Terrace, where the ballpark’s existing Tony Gwynn statue will be relocated, raised by 6 ft. This will be a viewing area for fans who purchased tickets in Gallagher Square — but when games aren’t in session it will be used as picnicking space.

🎟 The game day experience

The project will give locals more reasons to visit Gallagher Square, but when it’s game time, the space will be reserved for fans. One of the biggest changes will be tiered-style seating on the grassy hill, with the Tony Gwynn Terrace behind it.

The entrance at Ninth and J streets will also be expanded, designed to improve accessibility, security, and wait times. If this sounds good, there will also be a revised speaker system that will mitigate sound to reduce its impact on the community.

Construction will primarily take place during the off-season after the 2023 baseball season and is expected to be completed by the Padres’ return in 2024.

We’re going to give it to you straight, SD. SmileDirectClub, the popular at-home teeth straightening provider, has a new treatment option — and San Diego is just one of four cities they’re launching it in.

SmileDirectClub CarePlus+ offers the same convenience of licensed virtual care and getting aligners shipped directly to your house, but with the added option of in-person appointments with a local dentist. Here’s how the 3-step process works:
  1. Book a free appointment with a local dentist: The dentist takes a high definition 3D scan of your teeth and answers all your questions.
  2. Get aligners shipped to your door + receive expert guidance — either virtually with a licensed network dentist or in-person with a local dentist (it’s up to you).
  3. See results in as little as four-six months, backed by a Lifetime Smile Guarantee™.
Bonus: SmileDirectClub CarePlus+ costs a flat-fee of $3,900 or $115 per month (that’s up to thousands of dollars cheaper than traditional clear aligners).*

🦘 Hoppy new zoo animals
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has seen a baby boom recently. Over the past couple of months, more new babies have called the zoo home.

Recently, the Safari Park revealed a baby Matschie’s tree kangaroo named Kikori was born — the second of the species ever born there. The joey was the size of a jellybean when she arrived in August, but now, she’s venturing out of her mother’s pouch and learning to climb. Visitors may be able to see her exploring her habitat at the Walkabout Australia section of the park.

In April, the Safari Park announced it welcomed a new Przewalski’s horse foal, the second born as a result of cloning. The first successful clone, Kurt, was born in 2020 and also lives at the Safari Park. The unnamed foal was created with the same living cell line as Kurt, making them genetic twins born three years apart.

From the editor
Good morning, San Diego. Like most Mondays, I could use some caffeine to get things going, and I recommend giving Queenstage Coffee House in Encinitas a shot. The menu features great breakfasts and drinks, but the Salty Belgian Waffle Latte certainly caught my eye. Why eat a waffle when you can drink it with espresso?
