Outdoors
Let it flow — even desert communities are seeing an increase in water after recent storms. The rainfall caused San Felipe Creek to flood, resulting in water entering the Sentenac Cienega in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The last time this happened was February 2019. 💧 (National Weather Service)
Transit
National City’s free, zero-emissions shuttle program is getting ready to take offthis summer. Free Rides Around National City (aka FRANC) will allow locals to get to and from mass transit stations via fixed routes or with on-demand requests. 🚙 (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Open
Something new is cooking in Oceanside. Heritage Barbecue & Beer Co. is now open — Wednesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. — serving craft barbecue, beers, and cocktails. The new eatery is the second location from the Orange County-founded business and the first in San Diego County. 🍖
Health
UC San Diego revealed the Shiley EyeMobile for Children, a 33-ft bus that will travel to schools in underserved areas and provide kids with eye exams and glasses if needed. The fully-furnished vehicle offers two exam rooms and replaces the EyeMobile bus that operated for the past 15 years. 👓(Ophthalmology Times)
Coming Soon
Here’s the scoop: Pop Pie Co. and Stella Jean’s Ice Cream will be expanding into Pacific Beach. The two stores make the perfect pairing and will move into a 1,100-sqft space on Garnet Avenue that once housed Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. The restaurants are slated to open in February, and plan more openings in San Diego County this year. 🥧 (Eater San Diego)
Number
106,000. That’s how many residents in San Diego County are estimated to not have access to broadband internet. Many live in unincorporated areas, where infrastructure is lacking, and the county is looking at projects to connect them to broadband internet. This could take a decade and cost over $100 million. 📶 (San Diego Union-Tribune)

We can see clearly now, the rain is gone — at least for a little while. The chance of rain is seriously lower for the remainder of the week and into next week, with the exception of potential showers tomorrow evening.
So, where did we see the most rain in San Diego County? As of 9:20 a.m. yesterday, Palomar Observatory saw the most rainfall with 11.22 inches (using 5-day precipitation totals from the National Weather Service). Here are some other notable accumulations throughout the county:
Julian — 7.80 inches
Escondido — 5.57 inches
La Mesa — 4.52 inches
National City — 4.21 inches
Carlsbad — 4 inches
Fashion Valley — 3.68 inches
San Diego International Airport — 2.78 inches
Borrego Springs — 0.59 inches
On average, San Diego has 5.3 rainy days in January with an average of 2.28 inches of precipitation. This storm system exceeded the monthly average, but the rainiest January on record was in 2005, with 6.40 inches of rain.
Editor’s pick: Good morning, San Diego. If you were lucky, you might have seen a rainbow after the recent storms. Some people had twice the luck and saw double rainbows. Birch Aquarium recorded one at Scripps Pier, and one was captured over San Carlos yesterday morning. 🌈
