Heavy rain, flash flooding expected this weekend in San Diego, CA

It’s been so hot in San Diego, we feel your pain. After an 11-day heat wave that prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to extend local Excessive Heat Warnings twice, forecasters say rain is on the way.

According to the NWS and National Hurricane Center (NHC), heavy rain + strong winds are expected to sweep San Diego County tonight and this weekend — a result of Hurricane Kay forming off the coast of Mexico. Here’s what we know.

🧭 Tracking Kay
Hurricane Kay is tracking north — parallel to the Baja California peninsula — through today. NWS says it won’t directly hit San Diego County, but CNN says it will make the closest pass to Southern California for a hurricane since Hurricane Nora in 1997.

When it’s ~150-250 miles from San Diego, it’ll start to weaken into more of a tropical storm. The NHC is tracking Kay here.

🌧️ Impact to local weather
As Kay weakens, the NWS expects an “abrupt change” in SoCal’s extreme weather pattern — from windy + hot through this evening, to “tropical and wet with flash flooding potential” late Friday through Saturday. During this time, local areas from the mountains east into the desert could get between 2-4 inches of rain.

In addition to heavy rain, the NHC says Kay’s biggest impacts to SoCal are gusty winds + dangerous ocean conditions. To that end, the NWS has issued a couple of new weather warnings:
Post-rain, slightly cooler weather is expected next week.

New lounge coming to The Marine Room 🌊

New lounge planned for The Marine Room 🌊

The tide is turning at The Marine Room in La Jolla — with big changes on the horizon for the oceanfront restaurant on Spindrift Drive. 🌊

The 81-year-old landmark business — known for its eye-level location right on the surf and dramatic, high tide dinners with the waves hitting right up against the windows — will temporarily close Sun., Sept. 11-Fri., Sept. 30, for a bit of a makeover.

You see, a new lounge concept + interior upgrades are underway, set to be unveiled in early October. A rep tells SDtoday that guests can expect an “enhanced ambiance and a new era to drink, eat, and take in the views.” 🌅

The new area will offer bottle service, chef-driven cocktails, an expanded wine + bubbles list, and seafood-centric small plates. 🥂

We can’t wait to see these changes roll in.
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by Monica.

Editor’s pick: Happy Friday. Sure, we all know + love Liberty Station for its food scene, but did you know that many of the historic barracks are home to local artists’ studios? 🖼️

Sometimes, the artists are even there working, teaching classes, or selling their masterpieces. We love exploring these vibrant hidden gems — like Barracks 16 on Historic Decatur Road. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see those color-splashed chairs at the entrance.
