Pacific Beach officially waved hello to a new PB Community Surf Garden mosaic mural on the PB Rec Center’s north wall this month.

This display — designed by local artist and muralist Rob Tobin — began taking shape in the spring, but a dedication ceremony last week marked the completion of the project four years in the making. The mosaic repurposed 44 surfboards and arranged them to resemble flowers.

Overall, members of the community donated 100+ surfboards. The remaining ~60 boards will be arranged into a second mural on the rec center’s south wall that will look like a sunset. However, that project is on hold until structural repairs to the wall are finished.

These projects are entirely funded by community members, and there are still sponsorship opportunities available to help reach funding goals.
