Spring has sprung, and as we put winter behind us, it’s time to say out with the old. It’s also a season of rebirth, so if you’re cleaning out like-new or gently used items, why not give them some new life? In the spirit of spring cleaning, we’ve rounded up a few San Diego County organizations that accept donated items, help locals in need + support community causes.
📦 Large Hauls
If you’ve got a lot to give, like clothing, furniture, appliances, entertainment + toys, these organizations provide reused goods at affordable prices.
- The Salvation Army also accepts car donations.
- Father Joe’s Villages offers furniture pickups (with a free option) for items it can resell in stores.
- Goodwill San Diego County even has some technology recycling centers for bigger donations.
👕 Clothing
- San Diego Rescue Mission relies on donations of clothing + linens to provide individuals dealing with housing insecurities a place to stay.
- Sharia’s Closet in College East provides clothes + diapers to families dealing with emergency situations.
- Out of the Closet in Hillcrest accepts clothing, furniture, and homegoods for resale — 96 cents of every $1 raised goes toward HIV testing + care.
- Have professional outfits? Donate them to help a student gain job experience at USD’s Torero Closet + The Stand at San Diego Mesa College.
🍽️ Kitchenware
- Kitchens for Good Shop in Pacific Beach accepts cooking + baking supplies that are underused or can be reused.
🧩 Childcare
- Birthline of San Diego accepts childcare supplies + clothing to provide resources to parents in need.
- Bridge of Hope SD helps families enduring transition. In addition to clothing + furniture, this is a great place to donate toys with more life left in them.
💻 Technology
- If you have usable tech like laptops, TVs, scanners, or smartphones, Computers 2 Kids San Diego collects technology for educational use.
- Not sure if you can use those items? San Diego Futures Foundation will put your tech to good use or recycle it responsibly when it’s unusable.
🛋️ Furniture
- San Diego Habitat for Humanity uses donated equipment + furniture to build homes — whether you have leftovers from a project you didn’t complete or can reuse supplies from a remodel. It will also pick up accepted car donations, just enter information online.
🩸 Blood
- Don’t have much to get rid of? The San Diego Blood Bank is always in need of blood if you are able to donate.
