Gallop apace, you fiery-footed steeds — Roméo et Juliette opens at the San Diego Civic Theatre (1100 Third Ave.) this Sat., March 26, 2022. The opera, which tells the classic, tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers from clashing families, runs for just four performances, closing on Sun., April 3.

You’ve likely experienced Romeo and Juliet in some form, whether you read it in high school, performed it in college, or saw a film version by Franco Zeffirelli or Baz Luhrmann (or maybe you just love West Side Story). We’re willing to bet you’ve never seen the opera version, though.

In San Diego Opera’s Roméo et Juliette, a cast of young stars brings Shakespeare’s beloved play to life, including tenor Pene Pati as Roméo and soprano Nicole Cabell as Juliette (who are both making exciting San Diego Opera debuts), baritone Hadleigh Adams as Mercutio, and mezzo soprano Sarah Coit as Stephano.

Upping the romance factor, the opera is sung in French with English translations above the stage, and also includes an onstage ballet. Tickets ($45+) are available now for all four performances — and bonus: SDtoday readers can get 15% off. Showtimes are:

  • Sat., March 26 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Tues., March 29 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Fri., April 1 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sun., April 3 at 2 p.m.

To help you plan your night out: The run time is 3 hours, including one 20 minute intermission.
