A taste of the Padres + an adventurous sea lion

Hello Friday.

May 27 2022

Take me out of the ballpark ⚾

When it comes to food, we’ve got a lot on our home plate. You might head to Petco Park to root for the home team — but when you’re there, you’ll be able to buy more than just peanuts + Cracker Jacks.

The food at the ballpark is so good, we’re finding ourselves craving these tastes even when there isn’t a game. Thankfully, many vendors are local restaurants, so you can get a taste of the Padres all over town. We’ve rounded up 10 great vendors from inside the park + where you’ll find them on the outside.

🍖 Grand Ole BBQ

Padres fans fell in love with this restaurant — where Texas flavors meat California taste buds — when it replaced Phil’s BBQ during the 2021 season. The eatery was founded when San Diego native Andy Harris opened his first restaurant in North Park in 2015 + a second location in East County’s Flinn Springs in 2018.

📍 3302 32nd St. San Diego, North Park

📍 15505 Olde Highway 80, El Cajon

🧊 Holy Paleta

A new addition in 2022, paleta lovers are now able to cool off with their favorite treats during the game. As the summer starts to heat up, you’ll be glad these frozen fruit + cream-based bars aren’t reserved for ball games.

🍔 Hodad’s

There are burgers — and then there’s Hodad’s. The local favorite has people flipping out at Petco Park, so fans can take comfort in knowing that the Padres don’t need to be playing if they want to get another burger.

📍 5010 Newport Ave., Ocean Beach

📍 945 Broadway, downtown San Diego

🍕 Pizza Port

Our go-to spot for ballpark pizza, this local chain is also known for its beers. You can pick up brews at many stores — but the food isn’t reserved for the park.

🍪 Cravory Cookies

As if being at a Padres game wasn’t sweet enough, this local bakery is serving its cookies + making ice cream sandwiches. The cravings may not stop after the game — but the Point Loma bakery isn’t too far away.

POST OF THE DAY

Brace yourself for this — a baby giraffe at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has learned to walk thanks to the help of the zoo’s care team. Msituni, which means “in the forest” in Swahili, was born with hyperextension of the carpi, the bones equivalent of the human wrist. This caused her legs to bend improperly, hindering her ability to walk and impacting her chances of survival.

An animal care team fit her for custom leg braces and took recovery one step at a time. She was recently released to roam in the park’s savannah habitat where she’s been running freely and growing in size + weight.

THE WRAP

Editor’s pick: Good morning, San Diego. Learning about Msituni the giraffe has made me so happy + grateful for our zoo. I’m an annual member, but I often forget that this gives me access to the Safari Park as well. This is a great reminder to plan a trip — and hopefully see Msituni.
