Unique San Diego fitness trends + King Tide season

Hello Monday.

January 17 2022

Staying active, San Diego-style

We’re walking out of 2021 and running into 2022. This is the time of year when people commit to getting and staying active, and not to brag — but we’re already one of the fittest cities in the US.

If you haven’t quite found your stride yet, you might be looking in the wrong places… besides the usual gyms and running paths, this city is also home to some unique fitness activities you can’t find anywhere else.

Turns out there’s a reason why mermaids have great abs. | Photo via Hotel del Coronado

Mermaid Fitness

If you see a mermaid swimming around Coronado, don’t panic — join the fun. Hotel del Coronado hosts aquatic-cardio classes that will give you the core workout of a lifetime, all while putting you in a fin that would make Ariel proud.

Pole Buzz

When you think of pole dancing, think of strength. Queen Bee’s in North Park offers a number of different dance classes, but the most unique ones may be on the pole. All it takes is trying one class, and you’ll see exactly how many muscles these performers have to have for this style of dance. (Spoiler alert: all of them.)

It’s not yoga, it’s not paddle boarding — it’s stand-up yoga paddle boarding. | Photo via @floatingyogis

Floating Yoga

SoCal residents are known for enjoying yoga and paddle boarding, but these activities are usually done separately. Floating Yogis, however, offers a weekly stand-up paddle board yoga class at Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, where you can combine your favorite indoor and outdoor activities (the ultimate version of multitasking). Namaste, friends.

NEWS NOTES

Weather

  • 60º | Afternoon clouds, mainly sunny | 13% chance of rain
  • Brr, it’s cold (for us) in here. San Diego is officially on its longest run of sub-70 degree weather days in six years. Yesterday marked our 38th consecutive day without reaching 70 degrees, tying the last record set in 2015-2016. Will we beat it today? Looking like it… 🌧  (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Sunrise + Sunset

  • Rise: 6:51 a.m.
  • Set: 4:58 p.m.

Tide

  • Low: 6:24 a.m. + 7:10 p.m.
  • High: 1:07 a.m. + 12:12 p.m.

Health

  • San Diego County has suspended a hospital emergency diversion policy twice this week, saying “capacity is exhausted.” The policy was designed to redirect ambulances from overcrowded ERs to less crowded hospitals, lightening the loads of those at capacity. Officials say overcrowding in ERs is affecting hospital staffing + bandwidth across the county. (NBC7)

Edu

  • San Diego State announced it will move almost all of its classes online for the first two weeks of the spring semester, expecting to resume in-person on Mon., Feb. 7. The move is an effort by the school (with “minor exceptions”) to curb the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. 💻  (FOX5)

Ranked

  • How’s that New Year’s resolution going? Pretty good we’re guessing. San Diego ranks No. 5 on WalletHub’s list of best cities for keeping New Year’s resolutions. The list considers 57 metrics like exercise opportunities, income growth + employment outlook. 🎉  (WalletHub)

Open

  • Sammy’s Food+Wine has reopened in its original La Jolla location — 702 Pearl St. — after being closed for two months. The restaurant has been renovated (updated patio, hello), and has expanded its menu with an emphasis on more sandwiches, tacos + pitas. 🥪  (Times of San Diego)

Hear ye, hear ye — King Tide Season is upon us, San Diego.

A normal occurrence — usually twice a year — king tides are the highest predicted high tide of the year, at any coastal location, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. You can see from this shot of Children’s Pool Beach — this year brought king tides as high as seven feet. (NBC 7)

THE WRAP

Editor’s Pick: Big round of applause to the whole city for making it on that “Most Active” list — that’s something to be proud of, even if we aren’t hitting 70 degrees every day. Regardless of your resolutions this year, that Mermaid Class is looking awfully cool, don’t you think? I’m guessing there are tons of locals eager to be Part of That World.
