    Health
    • The County Board of Supervisors voted to end the local COVID-19 emergency declaration on Feb. 28 — matching the end of California’s emergency declaration. This will end the vaccine mandate for city workers and require public officials to meet in person, but the county will continue to provide services for testing, vaccinations, and tracing of the virus. 🩺 (NBC 7)
    Outdoors
    • The California Department of Food and Agriculture declared a state of emergency in Rancho Bernardo after detecting Huanglongbing (HLB) during an inspection. Opening
    • Bafang Dumpling is planning to open at The Village in Mira Mesa by the end of the year, letting the community get its fill of Taiwanese cuisine. The chain has 1,300+ locations across Asia, but this will be its first restaurant in San Diego and second in SoCal, behind the San Gabriel location. 🥟 (Eater San Diego)
    Try This
    • Rubio’s is known for its Original Fish Taco, but calling it the best sounds too fishy. So, the locally-founded chain is hosting its “Battle for the Best Fish Taco.” Through Feb. 27, you can upload your recipe for a chance to win $1,000 and the winning taco will be featured on the restaurant’s menu. 🌮
    Older Adults
    • You’re never too old to get wild. This month, adults ages 65+ can get into the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for free. Qualifying visitors must present a valid photo ID at entry, and can then enjoy an adventure. 🦁
    Ranked
    • Love is always in the air in San Diego because the city ranked No. 60 on WalletHub’s list of “2023’s Best Places to Get Married.” The city was ranked highly for its facilities, services, attractions, and activities, but the rating was negatively impacted due to costs. 💍 (WalletHub)

Three San Diego players are heading to the big game. Not the Super Bowl — we’re talking about Puppy Bowl XIX. The pupular sporting event sends 100+ adoptable dogs to Puppy Bowl Stadium to compete for the “Lombarky Trophy.” 🐶

Carlos and Crocket come from Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, and — as a historic Puppy Bowl first — the brothers are the first siblings to compete in the game together. The Dachshund-blends are inseparable, and both join Team Fluff to take on Team Ruff.

Also on Team Fluff is Erin, representing San Diego Humane Society (SDHS). Thanks to the organization, the terrier mix found her forever home — but SDHS still has 500+ pets in need of adoption.

The 3-hour game will air on Animal Planet and stream on Discovery+ on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m., with a preshow at 10 a.m. McGregor’s Bar & Grill will host a watch party from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to support the Helen Woodward Animal Center.
    THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Michael.

Editor’s pick: Good morning, San Diego. As Super Bowl Sunday approaches, I’m so glad to see local animal shelters get represented at the Puppy Bowl. We’re lucky to live in an area that’s so dog-friendly, and there are many businesses dedicated to pampering our pooches. My dog loves taking trips to Doggie Style Pets in Little Italy, and he always leaves with a new treat.
