Black history in San Diego should be celebrated every day. Across our county, there are many places that reflect theBlack experience. Here are eight spots where you can see some of those legacies.
🥁 World Beat Cultural Center | Balboa Park
The brightly colored building on Park Boulevard celebrates all cultures, art, music, and dance through community classes, exhibitions, and events. Tomorrow, the center will host Black Com!x Day to celebrate Black contributions in the world of comics, and on Sunday, Feb. 19, it’ll host its 42nd Tribute to Reggae Legends.

🕊️ MLK Jr./Mount Hope Community Mural | State Route 94
In 1989, a 10-mile stretch of SR-94 was designated as the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway. Through grant funding, a project to paint a large-scale mural of Dr. King on an embankment along the freeway was completed in 2012. You can see the touching tribute between Home and Euclid avenues.

💪 Sojourner Truth Statue | Marshall College, UC San Diego
In January 2015, Marshall College at UC San Diego unveiled a powerful, 6-ft statue of abolitionist and women’s rights activistSojourner Truth. Centrally located on Ridge Walk, the campus art piece was created by local artist and UC San Diego alumna Manuelita Brown. The statue includes a plaque with a quote from Truth: “I feel safe in the midst of my enemies, for the truth is powerful and will prevail.”
🖼️ San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art | Egger Highlands
This museum collects, preserves, and displays works of art by and about African Americans, and fosters appreciation of those works through educational programs and events. On Saturday, Feb. 25, the museum will collaborate with the San Diego History Center to honor its trailblazing 2023 Keepers of the Culture. The event is free, RSVP.

The Botanical Building in Balboa Park is down to its studs. The city says crews are now working on “shoring the structure to repair and replace the truss bases and supporting steel.” The historic landmark has been closed for renovations since January 2022, and is expected to be completed this December. 🏗️

Johnston’s Restaurant & Bar — housed at the former Small Bar site that was once a 1920’sfive-and-dime store — is now open. The University Heights eatery is open for dinner with dishes like a wagyu smash burger and yakitori. A 2,000-sqft garden patio will be added this summer, too. 🍔

Businesses offering outdoor dining in public right of way areas like sidewalks and parking spaces can apply for up to $20,000 in city grants to keep legally operating those spots. San Diego Wave FC released their 28-gameschedule for the 2023 NWSL season, which includes 14 matches at Snapdragon Stadium. The season kicks off at home on Saturday, March 25, against the Chicago Red Stars. Single-game tickets will be available next week, and season tickets are available now. 🥅

Snapdragon Stadium is made for fútbol. The venue announced a Tour Águila match between Mexico’s beloved Club América and cross-border favorites Xolos de Tijuana is coming on Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m. — with a Fan Fest at 11 a.m. Tickets go on sale at 12 p.m. today. ⚽

Out at the Park — the annual collaboration between the San Diego Padres and San Diego Pride in support of the LGBTQ+ community — is set for Friday, April 14. The Padres will play the Brewers at 6:40 p.m., and the theme package includes a commemorative hat and $10 donation to San Diego Pride. 🏳️🌈
Theater
La Jolla Playhouse will host the Latinx New Play Festival on Friday, Oct. 27-Sunday, Oct. 29 — the annual event formerlyheld at the San Diego Repertory Theatre until it shut down last summer. Feelin’ Lucky? St. Paddy’s O’Beach Party returning to Ocean Beach

The luck of the Irish is coming back to Ocean Beach — two-fold. 💚
The second-ever St. Paddy’s O’Beach Party will return to the Ocean Beach Pier parking lot (near Newport Avenue) Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18, from 1-11 p.m. both days.
The 21+ festival — from the organizers behind OB Oktoberfest — will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with headlining reggae rockers The Expendables and other musical performers, plus themed gamesand green beer.
On Saturday, the event will host a “Guac Off” competition featuring recipes from local vendors vying to be crowned the “Best Guac in OB.” Last year, La Doña took the title. 🥑
General admission tickets can be purchased at the door for $20, or you can snag $50 VIP tickets online that include two drinks and other perks. A portion of proceeds will benefit two community organizations, Ocean Beach MainStreet Association and The Peninsula Alliance.
