San Diego County has 42 school districts and nearly 500,000 students across its ~780 schools. We’re giving you the 411 on enrollment, student-teacher ratio, and more for the area’s major public school districts. And don’t worry, there won’t be any homework.

Chula Vista City Council considered 10 candidates to fill its District 3 seat and after a vote Tuesday, they appointed Alonso Gonzalez to the 2-year councilmember position. This means there will be no special election; the seat was left vacant in November when Steve Padilla was elected to the State Senate. ✋ (ABC 10)

The rare, half-mile “green comet” — discovered by Palomar Observatory last year — will continue making its rounds tonight, visible in areas without city lights between 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Scientists say the last time the comet was this close to Earth was 50,000 years ago, during the Stone Age. ☄️ (San Diego Union-Tribune + KPBS)

Development

The US Department of Transportation has awarded $800 million in grants nationwide to improve roads via Safe Streets and Roads for All. This includes $132 million across California communities, like a $680,000 grant for the City of San Diego to continue making streets safer, and $2,548,000 for SANDAG’s regional plan. 🦺

Edu

Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers discovered a new species of deep-sea fish — Pyrolycus jaco — in the eastern Pacific Ocean off Costa Rica. The “eel-like fish with pouty features” is ~6 inches long, with pink and lavender hues on its body, and has been seen at depths of 5,741 to 5,906 ft. 🤿 (Scripps Institution of Oceanography)

The 27th annual Taste of Third returns to downtown Chula Vista on Thursday, March 23, 4-8 p.m. Attendees will stroll Third Avenue — from H to E streets — sipping and sampling goodies from 30+ participating eateries, bars, and breweries. Early bird tickets are now available. 🍔
