Class is in session: The first day of school is coming up — Mon., Aug. 29, for the San Diego Unified School District. For some families, this season can bring insecurities. So, we’re rounding up local organizations that help students supply their school year + letting you know how you can help sharpen their minds and pencils.

🚌 Stuff the Bus

San Diego County Office of Education + San Diego County Credit Union are challenging locals to stuff the bus and help students experiencing homelessness receive backpacks filled with supplies. The organizations are asking for monetary donations — online or at Ralphs + Food 4 Less stores — through Wed., Aug. 31. Any amount helps, but $20 fills a backpack for an elementary student or $25 for a secondary-age student.

🎒 Food 4 Kids Backpack Program

Some students food insecurity when they’re outside school. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank provides elementary school students with nutritious items when they head home for the weekend, but relies on donations to fuel the program.

🖍️ San Diego Center for Children Back-to-School Drive

This organization is helping with back to school shopping — because it’s challenging locals to supply students’ success when money is a concern. You can make monetary donations, collect in-demand supplies, or make wishes come true by shopping Amazon + Walmart wish lists, with the goal of being ready for the school year by Fri., Aug. 26.

🍎 San Diego Mesa College Foundation

Back to school season can impact post-secondary students too. San Diego Mesa College collects supplies year-round to help with basic needs like food, clothing, and toiletries, or you can make a financial donation to help the areas most in-need.

✂️ UWSD Back to School Drive

United Way of San Diego County is collecting funding + classroom supplies to erase financial insecurities and close gaps in educational inequalities. You can support the organization with a monetary donation, or by sending items directly to the organization through Mon., Aug. 15.

✏️ School Supply Kit Assembly

If you’d like to give some time, SupplyBank.org needs volunteers to help prepare thousands of school supply kits for homeless + low-income students in Southern California. Sign up for a time slot tomorrow at the San Diego Convention Center for the opportunity to pack a student’s school year with positivity.
